Encouraging engagement and knowledge sharing across scholarly publishing

ALPSP has a number of special interest groups available to join for free. These are open to members and the wider scholarly publishing industry.

The ALPSP Special Interest Groups are sponsored by Publishers’ Licensing Services (PLS)

Main aims of the groups

  • Increase engagement amongst like-minded scholarly communities
  • Tackle and drill down into relevant issues and problems
  • Increase networking with peers, allowing experiences and case studies to be shared
  • Suggest ways to address problems and find solutions to particular issues
  • Share findings with others in scholarly publishing.

A sense of belonging and realising that you are not alone in facing specific challenges is perhaps one of the best reasons to get involved in a SIG.

Special interest group topics

The following groups are open to join for ALPSP members and non-members:

 

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)

    This Special Interest Group focuses on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in scholarly publishing. Generative AI is a strong force for change that we should understand, develop, and apply appropriately. The explosion of generative AI has important implications for academic publishing across all levels.

  • ALPSP & AUPresses University Press Group

    This group is a collaborative safe space where university presses of all sizes, can work together to the benefit of the whole community. University Presses should strive to work collectively together to overcome barriers and create one strong voice.

  • Content Discovery

    The group brings together publishing professionals to share experiences and best practices for optimising discoverability of scholarly content, and to discuss current and emerging trends and needs in the discovery space.

  • Continuous Improvement

    Continuous improvement and operational excellence techniques continue to provide measurable value across multiple business sectors.

  • Early Career

    This group aims to bring together individuals across scholarly publishing who identify as ‘Early Career Professionals’, to help foster a community and create networking and development opportunities. 

  • Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)

    Building and improving diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility within an organization or workplace can be complex and involve many processes, programmes and initiatives. This group offers a forum to discuss and share experiences, best practice and advice with others within the ALPSP community. 

  • Events

    The group will serve to discuss best practices, share ideas, and be a sounding board for those on either side of the events space - organization or participation. It will also cover new initiatives, technologies and logistics. 

  • Library Publishing

    This group is a unique place for professionals to come together and discuss their internal publishing activities, share knowledge and discuss industry trends.

  • Marketing Connected (general)

    It can often be lonely working in marketing, so having the ability to discuss industry topics and trends with others outside of your organization is imperative.

  • Marketing Maestros (senior level)

    Our SIG provides a unique platform for senior leaders to connect, collaborate, and address pressing issues outside of industry events where marketing topics are often overlooked.

  • Open Access Books

    The group is designed to be a publisher-focused community, covering a range of common issues and themes within the Open Research landscape.

  • Open Peer Review

    A group focused on open peer review to share collective experience, provide recommendations, or produce documents or shared ideals as a result.

  • Production and Publishing Operations

    Our industry is going through major change and this special interest group focused on production aims to enable fellow professionals to share and discuss ideas. 

  • Researchers

    This group aims to explore ways for researchers to engage more widely with publishers, such as ALPSP members, through more direct interaction. This information may be used to improve products and services, or by third parties in anonymized reports.

  • Research Integrity

    This group is a forum for research integrity professionals to come together to help navigate this landscape from a personal and professional development perspective.

  • Sales, Commercial and Business Development

    The momentum of the Open Access movement and increasingly limited library budgets have made sales increasingly challenging putting pressure on the sales function of publishing organizations to bring in revenue.

  • The SDGs and Publishing

    We offer a supportive and encouraging environment for members to talk about their needs and experiences, and share resources, examples and ideas.

  • Suggest a SIG
