Overview

We offer a supportive and encouraging environment for members to talk about their needs and experiences, and share resources, examples and ideas.

Why have we formed this SIG?

Awareness of the need for organizations and individuals to take action to support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is growing, as we progress through the ‘Decade of Action’, up to 2030. The SDG Publishers Compact has >300 members, and many ALPSP members are signatories, all looking for ways to increase their efforts.

In the experience of the SDG Compact Fellows and other SDG groups, there also remain many in our industry who have limited knowledge of the SDGs, or who are seeking support and resources to enable them to contribute, or activate their organization.

When raised as an idea in an ALPSP newsletter many expressions of interest in joining were received.

What we aim to do:

We acknowledge that the SDGs is a very broad area, so we will identify the needs of members and look to focus, with a view to being able to pivot our focus according to evolving needs.

Ideas to start off are:

  • Highlight industry actions and share knowledge, resources, best practice and pitfalls to avoid
  • Increase the contributions that publishers are making to achieving the SDGs
  • Share challenges and needs for taking action, and identify other resources that are needed
  • Identify opportunities for cross-publisher collaboration
  • Discuss and share experience on how a publisher can measure their contributions.

What practical activities will we undertake?

  • Workshops and discussion roundtables to share learning, case studies and challenges
  • Sharing and highlighting relevant resources and tools - to be hosted on the ALPSP website
  • Proposing conference sessions, seminars or training courses to the relevant ALPSP committees
  • Networking among publisher and partner organization staff who want to take action for the SDGs
  • Flagging SDG-related content at the Annual Conference and in ALPSP’s other outputs e.g. LP articles
  • Undertaking advocacy initiatives, online and in person, including writing blog posts
  • Supporting ALPSP in making its contribution to the SDG Publishers Compact and its 3 chosen SDGs:

o   SDG8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
o   SDG9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
o   SDG17: Partnerships for the Goals

Who are our group members?

The SIG is open to anyone who has an interest in supporting the SDGs, whether their organization is an ALPSP member or not. Organizations can be at very different points on their sustainability journey, so SIG participants might be aiming to persuade their organization to take action, or in employee resource groups relating to an SDG, or actively engaged in ESG/CSR or environmental impact work. We also have group members who work on journals, books, or other products in subjects relating to an SDG they support.

How often do we meet and report on our actions?

We will arrange at least three virtual meetings per year, and aim to meet in person with any members who attend the ALPSP Annual Conference each year. We will report to ALPSP’s Membership & Marketing Committee at least twice per year.

How does this SIG fit with the EDI working group?

This SIG would defer fully to the EDI working group for any EDI topics or interests, to avoid duplication of effort.
