After nearly 60 years of awarding annually the prestigious Paper Gold Medal to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the print, paper and allied industries, the Paper Industry Gold Medal Association has passed the custodianship of the Gold Medal to the Stationers’ Company, the livery company for the communication and content industries, who will now be the residual body for The Gold Medal; ensuring the safekeeping and oversight of the Gold Medal for future generations.
The Gold Medal is the ultimate industry award and presented at the Paper Industry Gold Awards, held annually at Stationers’ Hall.
Martyn Eustace, Chairman of the Gold Medal Association says; “I’m delighted that The Stationers’ Company, closely associated with the Gold Medal since its inception, will now safeguard the future for the Gold Medal. Not only does the Stationers’ rich 620-year history make them an ideal custodian for the Gold Medal but their reach and influence across the many industry sectors will increase the profile and nominations for The Gold Medal throughout the Print, Paper and all Allied Industries.
Paul Wilson, Master of the Stationers’ Company welcomes the move: “As the historic home of printing, paper making, journalism and publishing in the UK, the Stationers’ Company is delighted to take on the custodianship of the Paper Industry Gold Medal and to work closely with Andrew Large and the CPI to ensure its continued success.”
Andrew Large, Director General of the CPI, Confederation of Paper Industries, comments: “I am delighted that the Stationers’ Company has assumed the proprietorship of the Gold Medal, and I look forward to working with the Livery, and in particular with the Clerk Giles Fagan, to award the Gold Medal, alongside the Paper Industry Gold Awards, for many years to come.”
Once the appointment of the Stationers’ Company as custodians of the Gold Medal is complete, the Paper Industry Gold Medal Association will be dissolved.

Notes to editors:
Whilst the origins of the Paper Gold Medal were clearly focused on the paper manufacturing sector, the Award has now become more inclusive and today is open to nominations from the wide range of print, paper and allied industries which encompass an ever increasing number of sectors and specialisms which supply an amazing range of materials including newspapers and magazines, direct mail and catalogues, envelopes and stationery, retail and transport packaging, bags and tissues. In fact, products too numerous to mention!
With a UK turnover estimated at over £20billion and more than 150,000 employees in 9,500 companies, the paper and print sector is an important UK economic contributor and employer. Our industry makes a big difference to the country and, by means of the Gold Medal, we aim to further encourage and recognise those who, by their exceptional contribution, ensure that our industry is recognised for its achievements.
The Paper Gold Medal is now the ultimate Industry Award and announced as the final Award at the Confederation of Paper Industries annual ‘Paper Industry Gold Awards’.
Winning the Paper Gold Medal is a prestigious achievement and brings the recipient well-earned publicity and recognition.
