Scholastica, a leading software solutions provider for academic journals, announced today that their Peer Review System now includes the option to integrate with the latest version of Crossref's Similarity Check plagiarism detection service (powered by iThenticate V2).

Journals subscribed to Scholastica's Peer Review System, and the latest version of Crossref Similarity Check (iThenticate V2) can turn on the new integration to generate similarity reports for all of their incoming submissions without any manual steps. When the integration is enabled, new manuscripts are sent to Similarity Check automatically at the end of the submission process. Each manuscript's resulting "Similarity Score" is displayed in Scholastica along with a link to the full text-overlap report, which includes links to all similar content identified.

This integration is part of Scholastica's ongoing efforts to empower small and medium academy journal publishers to meet industry standards more efficiently and affordably than traditional publishing software and partner options, so they can further their scholarly missions.

"I love when Scholastica can make it easy for journal publishers of all sizes to get the most possible from their Crossref membership, and this integration with the iThenticate V2 version of Crossref's Similarity Check service does just that. The Similarity Check integration gives editors a power tool for spotting possible instances of plagiarism that leverages the millions of articles in iThenticate's database, and iThenticate V2 has more great features than ever before," said Scholastica Co-Founder and CEO Brian Cody.

Similarity Check gives Crossref members reduced-rate access to the iThenticate plagiarism detection tool from Turnitin, allowing them to check manuscripts for similarity to millions of documents in iThenticate's database of scholarly content to verify their originality. The latest version of iThenticate (V2) comes with a range of exciting new features, including improved preprint content identification and a new "red flag" feature that signals the detection of hidden text.

“Crossref members place a lot of value on being able to use the Similarity Check service to support their research integrity efforts. Being able to use iThenticate V2 with its new features as an integrated part of their standard publication workflows is key to being able to do this effectively, so we’re really pleased to have been able to collaborate with Scholastica to support this important work,” said Director of Product at Crossref Rachael Lammey.

In order to use Scholastica’s new Similarity Check integration, journals must be:

  • Subscribed to Scholastica’s Peer Review System
  • A Crossref member subscribed to the Similarity Check service
  • Using the latest version of iThenticate (V2) with their Similarity Check service

Journals subscribed to both Scholastica's Peer Review System and Crossref Similarity Check that are already using iThenticate V2 are eligible to request the new integration and can do so by following the instructions in this help document.

Scholastica Peer Review System users that are subscribed to Crossref Similarity Check but using the older iThenticate V1 will have to upgrade to iThenticate V2 to turn on the new integration. Crossref will be contacting these publishers about how to upgrade during October. If you don’t hear from Crossref by the end of the month, do email them.

For journals that wish to use this new integration but are not yet Crossref members (a prerequisite to subscribe to Similarity Check), you can learn how to join here. Once a Crossref member, you can learn how to sign up for Similarity Check (iThenticate V2), including eligibility requirements, in this Crossref help document. Journals that are not using Scholastica's Peer Review System can schedule a demo here to walk through the platform and learn how to get started.
