I have been actively involved with ALPSP throughout my publishing career, both as a member and a volunteer. Volunteering has given me the opportunity to contribute in a number of rewarding roles. Alongside being a member of the Training Committee, I have recently stepped into the role of Chair for the In-House Working Group, while also continuing to work as a trainer for the Introduction to Product Management training course and as a mentor in the ALPSP mentoring programme.
My initial motivation was to connect with other publishing professionals and become more actively involved with ALPSP as an organisation. Volunteering provides a great opportunity to build relationships across the industry, share experiences, and contribute to the wider publishing community. Volunteering has had a significant positive impact on both my professional development and personal growth. Working alongside peers from across the industry has helped me expand my own skills and knowledge, while also giving me exposure to areas of publishing that I would not typically encounter in my day-to-day role. It has also provided valuable opportunities to share my own expertise and experiences with the ALPSP teams and individuals I work with.
One particularly rewarding experience has been my role as an ALPSP mentor, which is now in its second year. I mentor individuals who are interested in Product Management but currently work in non-product roles. Supporting mentees as they learn how to apply product management principles within their own areas of work has been incredibly fulfilling. At the same time, the process has broadened my own understanding of different functions within publishing, making it a valuable learning experience for both mentor and mentee.
I would wholeheartedly encourage anyone considering volunteering to get involved. ALPSP is a friendly, welcoming, and supportive community. Volunteering offers a fantastic opportunity to meet and learn from colleagues across the industry, particularly if your own role can sometimes feel quite specialised or siloed. It’s a chance to gain new perspectives, develop new skills, and bring fresh ideas and knowledge back into your own role and organisation.
