Our client is seeking an experienced Publisher to manage and develop a portfolio of scientific journals. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with STM publishing experience who combines strong editorial and stakeholder management skills with a commercial approach to journal development.

Reporting to the Senior Publisher, you will take ownership of a portfolio of publishing products, developing and delivering journal strategies that support audience growth, content development and commercial performance. You will work closely with academic editors, editorial boards, partner societies and internal teams while identifying opportunities for new products and business development.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Develop and implement strategic plans for a portfolio of scientific journals, aligned with wider publishing and commercial objectives.
2. Build strong relationships with academic editors, editorial boards and, where relevant, partner societies.
3. Develop subject-area networks and use market, competitor and citation insights to inform journal strategy and identify growth opportunities.
4. Develop and execute commissioning strategies to attract high-quality content and improve the performance and profitability of individual journals.
5. Identify opportunities for new publishing products, acquisitions and wider commercial development.
6. Act as the primary internal and external contact for the journals within your portfolio, taking ownership of plans, activities and budgets.
7. Work collaboratively with marketing and other internal teams to deliver journal objectives.
8. Manage editorial boards, including membership, meetings, agendas and ongoing engagement with editors.
9. Maintain an understanding of developments across STM publishing and advise editors and stakeholders on relevant industry and product changes.
10. Manage relationships with publishing partners and societies, including reporting, presentations and contract renewals where appropriate.
11. Own journal budgets, forecasts and financial performance across the portfolio.
12. Manage and develop a Publishing Assistant, providing regular support, training and performance management.

Skills & Experience

1. Previous experience within STM journal publishing.
2. A science degree, preferably within the life sciences, and/or strong experience working with scientific subject matter.
3. A strong understanding of the academic journal publishing landscape and journal development strategies.
4. Experience commissioning or soliciting journal articles.
5. An understanding of publishing metrics, citation data and statistical analysis.
6. Experience working with journal budgets or comparable financial responsibilities.
7. Strong relationship-building skills and confidence working with academics, editors, societies and internal stakeholders.
8. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
9. Strong analytical, organisational and problem-solving abilities.
10. A commercial and strategic approach, with the ability to identify opportunities for portfolio growth.

The position will involve travel within the UK and internationally, with international travel potentially reaching up to eight weeks per year.
