The popular SYP Oxford Podcast is expanding under a new name, Inside Publishing. The Oxford team behind the podcast are collaborating with the other SYP committees to develop the initiative, with each SYP regional committee taking it in turns to plan and host an episode, bringing subscribers a diverse range of voices from all over the UK and Ireland.

SYP Oxford originally launched their podcast in March 2020 to make the SYP more accessible to aspiring publishers who could not attend in person events. It became a core part of SYP Oxford’s offering during the pandemic, when physical events were no longer possible and the society as a whole shifted to digital. 

SYP Oxford co-chair and founder of the podcast Charlotte Parr said: ‘I think that this is an exciting step forward for the society as a whole. Audio is a booming format within the industry and it makes sense for us to include this in our offering to aspiring publishers. 

“We hope that this will make the SYP accessible to a wider range of people and help people understand the many facets of publishing.’ 

Caroline Guillet, also SYP Oxford co-chair, added: ‘By opening up the podcast to all SYP regional branches, we are hoping to offer our listeners a 360° view of publishing in the UK, from Oxford to Ireland, showing how the industry as a whole is shifting to a more inclusive and accessible model.’

Previous guests on the podcast have included Hachette UK CEO David Shelley, Aki Shiltz, and Inspired Selection’s Suzy Astbury, covering topics ranging from the benefits of studying publishing to coping with job rejections to insights into specific departments. Listeners will now be able to tune in for a greater focus on regional publishing as well as discussions with BAME employees in an upcoming series.

Tanu Shelar and Amalia Mihailescu, Chair and Vice-chair of the SYP UK said: ‘We are thrilled to be working with SYP Oxford to make this podcast a UK-wide initiative. The Oxford committee has created an excellent channel that all our branches can now use to communicate with our members and partners. This is a great example of what we can achieve at the SYP when we come together!’

The Society of Young Publishers has branches in London, Oxford, the South West, the North, Scotland, and Ireland, as well as a UK-wide committee.
