Kudos to provide AI generated plain language summaries, showcasing and promotion of SHU Repository content
Kudos, the platform for showcasing research, has today announced that it has been chosen by the Library at Sheffield Hallam University to Showcase research from the University’s repository. Kudos is generating AI summaries of selected articles in the repository, and hosting these in vibrant image-led Story pages, which link back to the full text articles in the repository. The summaries will also be disseminated via Kudos Showcases, both at the institutional level, and in collections curated by academic subject areas or topical themes such as climate change. Showcasing research via Kudos is correlated to higher views, readership, discussion and citations.
Sheffield Hallam University has a particular focus on rising to real-world challenges. Its research programmes are designed to make a difference to people’s lives, which increases the importance of its research publications being found, read and understood by broad audiences. Partnering with Kudos to explain its research in plain language, and promote it via magazine-style Showcases, is part of the University’s strategy to increase reach and impact for its researchers.
“Our partnership with Kudos spans two areas in which the Library is innovating, to expand our support for researchers, and broaden the communities that benefit from our research,” says Dr Eddy Verbaan, Head of Library Research Support, Sheffield Hallam University. “Firstly, we continue to expand our research communication and impact services, to help researcher colleagues bring about real-world change. Secondly, this is part of our strategy for exploring responsible, ethical use of AI. Generating plain language summaries saves our researchers time – but the Kudos approach and toolkit ensures there is continued human agency and oversight.”
“The great benefit of our new AI capabilities is that we can Showcase research more strategically, with minimal effort required from researchers,” explains Sarah Mustapha, Business Development Manager at Kudos. “With the next REF fast approaching, and work to build impact needing to be underway now, it’s the perfect time for us to have launched this new service that helps universities optimise the performance of research outputs.”
The Kudos platform includes tools for authors to review, edit and approve the AI-generated summaries, and full reporting at article and institutional level showing views, Altmetric scores and citations. Kudos also provides unique metrics around communications channels being used to disseminate research, and around audiences reached.
