Scholastica

Scholastica and Maverick Publishing Specialists announce the launch of a global survey on the "Technology Needs of Small and Medium Journal Publishers," which is open for responses now through June 5, 2025. The survey results will be compiled into a free, openly available report.

Scholastica and Maverick have launched the "Technology Needs of Small and Medium Journal Publishers" survey to gather insights into the digital tools and workflow optimizations that would best serve the smaller publishing community for its members and the infrastructural and service providers who support them. For the purposes of the survey, a "small-to-medium-sized publisher" is defined as a publishing organization with under 1,000 employees.

The "Technology Needs of Small and Medium Journal Publishers" survey questions span:

  1. Platform and workflow management
  2. Research integrity and the rise of AI
  3. Vendor collaboration and support

The survey welcomes responses from those who work with publishers across research disciplines that meet the above "small-to-medium" criteria—whether a scholarly society, university press, independent press, research institute, or library/campus publisher.

At a time when the duties and expectations of journal publishers are rapidly expanding, this survey aims to develop a collective picture of the technology categories small-to-mid-sized publishers are currently using, their workflow pain points and priorities, and how they would like to engage with software and service providers to help inform the development of publishing innovations that will best serve their community in the future.

Scholastica and Maverick plan to share preliminary survey findings during the SSP Conference session "What smaller publishers need from tech vendors to level up."

Those who work with a journal publisher that meets the above "small-to-medium-sized" criteria can take the survey here.
