The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) today announced a five-year agreement with MDPI, the Open Access (OA) publisher. As of January 2027, ISSN will transfer publishing responsibilities for the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (JISSN) to MDPI.
“Partnering with MDPI represents an exciting new chapter for the ISSN and JISSN," said Dr. Jose Antonio, ISSN CEO and JISSN co-editor-in-chief. "Our shared commitment to open access ensures that the science of sports nutrition remains accessible, transparent, and impactful for researchers, practitioners, and athletes worldwide. In addition, we will be providing incentives for reviewers that will allow the journal to have more timely reviews.”
JISSN focuses on the acute and chronic effects of sports nutrition and supplementation strategies on body composition, physical performance and metabolism. By supporting JISSN’s OA format, MDPI ensures that scholars and the sporting community receive continued access to quality research about exercise and nutrition.
The journal currently has a 2024 Impact Factor of 3.9, receiving top quartile rankings for Sport Sciences (Q1) and Nutrition & Dietetics (Q2). Alongside a 2024 CiteScore of 8.9 and Q1 ranking in Scopus, JISSN will make a strong addition to MDPI’s US Clinical Medicine list, complementing other MDPI journals such as Nutrients and Sports.
"JISSN is already an established and reputable journal within the sports and nutrition space, providing valuable insights for scholars, practitioners, and athletes alike," said Dr. Carla Aloè, head of societies and acquisition at MDPI. "Going forward, our priority will be to preserve this legacy while ensuring editorial rigor, transparency, and a rapid and efficient publishing process. We look forward to supporting the International Society of Sports Nutrition in its mission to provide science-based sports nutrition and supplementation.”
