Learned Publishing, the journal on the publication of scholarly information, has appointed Mathias Astell, Haseeb Irfanullah and François van Schalkwyk as Associate Editors.

Pippa Smart, Editor-in-Chief of Learned Publishing, comments: “I am delighted to welcome our three new Associate Editors, who will work closely with me and Lettie Conrad to share their knowledge and experience of bibliometrics, open access publishing, editorial issues and university presses. The journal's impact has dramatically increased in the past five years with a large increase in articles from around the world, and by building our editorial capacity we will be able to maintain our fast turnaround speed and quality of decision. The journal continues to provide essential information to fulfil our vision of helping publishers make better decisions.”

Mathias Astell is Chief Journal Development & Marketing Officer at Open Access publisher Hindawi, working towards greater openness in research, removing the barriers to access and striving to put the researcher at the heart of their activities. Astell is also an advisor for Research4Life and has previously worked for the BMJ, Springer Nature and SAGE.

Dr Haseeb Irfanullah is a biologist-turned-development practitioner, and often introduces himself as a research enthusiast. Over the last two decades, Haseeb has worked for different international development organizations, academic institutions, donors, and the Government of Bangladesh in different capacities. Currently, he is an independent consultant on environment, climate change, and research systems. He is also involved with the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh as a visiting research fellow of its Center for Sustainable Development.

Dr François van Schalkwyk is postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST), Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and editor and trustee of the not-for-profit, open access scholarly book publisher African Minds. Broadly speaking, his research interests intersect with the study of science; specific interests within this domain include higher education studies, open science, science communication and scholarly publishing.
