IOP Publishing (IOPP) has launched a new, multidisciplinary, open access (OA) journal devoted to the design, development and application of artificial neural networks and brain-inspired systems towards advancing scientific discovery and realising emerging new computing technologies.
The scope and characteristics of Neuromorphic Computing and Engineering (NCE) have been designed in close consultation with the community so that it uniquely brings together all aspects of the field, serving a cross-disciplinary audience that will extend to physics, engineering, materials science, biology, neuroscience and computer science across academia and industry.
As a fully OA journal, research published in NCE will be universally accessible, ensuring maximum visibility and reach, and in the spirit of transparency and reproducibility authors will be encouraged to share data and code where appropriate for the benefit of the research community.
Professor Giacomo Indiveri, who leads the Neuromorphic Cognitive Systems group at the Institute of Neuroinformatics of the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich, has been appointed as Editor-in-Chief. NCE will also be guided by a diverse Editorial Board of leaders in the field, collectively representing the journal’s broad subject remit as they work closely with an in-house team to ensure editorial excellence and IOPP’s usual high standards of publishing service.
Professor Indiveri said: “Brain-inspired computation based on the design and application of artificial neural networks is a rapidly emerging area that holds great promise for next generation, low-power pervasive computing technologies. The challenge of developing real world “neuromorphic” systems today brings together researchers and industry extending across the sciences – Neuromorphic Computing and Engineering is a multidisciplinary journal timed to uniquely reflect this situation with a mission to unite the community and define the field for years to come.”
Dr Tim Smith, Associate Director at IOP Publishing said: “Neuromorphic Computing and Engineering represents another high-profile addition to our expanding OA portfolio and one that will build upon IOP Publishing’s long-standing reputation in the applied sciences. Through the support of a prestigious Editorial Board we look forward to developing the journal’s content and functionality to serve all aspects of a field that looks certain to make a significant contribution to science, engineering and industry into the future.”
Neuromorphic Computing and Engineering is now open for submissions. All OA article publication charges are currently paid by IOP Publishing and there will be no author fees for articles submitted before 2022. Full details about the scope and editorial requirements can be found on the journal homepage.
