The Directors and Council of the Association of Learned and Professional Publishers Association (ALPSP) are seeking to appoint an outstanding and dynamic Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to continue the work which ALPSP undertakes to represent the interests of scholarly publishers around the world.

ALPSP is an international membership trade body that supports and represents not-for-profit organizations and institutions that publish scholarly and professional content.  With over 300 members in 30 countries, membership also includes those that work with these publishers.

Our mission is to connect, inform, develop and represent the international scholarly and professional publishing community.

Founded in 1972 by 24 societies, ALPSP has grown to become the largest trade association helping scholarly and professional publishers around the world. Members continue to be at the heart of our work. They drive and shape what we do to make sure it is relevant to their needs.

ALPSP is governed by our full members. Each has a representative who votes on governance matters. A board of Directors oversees the strategic direction of the organization. They sit on the governing Council alongside Chairs of all our Committees and a number of co-opted members with specialist skills and experience. Together they provide advice and guidance on strategic priorities and running the organization.

Core to the success of the ALPSP is a knowledgeable team of nine staff. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the challenges facing scholarly publishers, several years’ experience in a senior position at an ALPSP member organisation or at a similar trade association, strong financial acumen, exceptional communication skills, contract management skills and the ability to lead a competent, talented and enthusiastic team of staff.

The Chief Executive is responsible for supporting Council (and the Committees which report to Council) in the development of the Association’s strategic aims, and for delivering the achievement of those aims, in accordance with the Memorandum and Articles, both directly and through staff and volunteers. The Chief Executive reports to Council, via the Chair (who conducts the CEO’s annual appraisal). The Chief Executive is also the Company Secretary.

The successful candidate will be a perceptive, innovative leader, with significant experience of developing productive relationships with members, partners and industry bodies.

We are looking to increase membership and diversify income so you will need to demonstrate experience in developing successful partnerships and commercial relationships.

This is a home-based role.

To be sent the job description and person specification, please email ALPSP Chair, Peter Ashman here.

Applications in the form of a covering letter demonstrating your experience in meeting the job criteria, your CV and salary expectations should be sent to Peter Ashman chair@alpsp.org to arrive no later than 17:00 (BST) on 12 April, 2019.

The ALPSP is committed to equality and diversity in its recruitment practice.
