ALPSP is supporting a project being run by The University of California, Davis and the California Digital Library (CDL) with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Entitled "Pay It Forward: Investigating a Sustainable Model of Open Access Article Processing Charges for Large North American Research Institutions”, the project is a year-long effort to study the implications of new funding models for scholarly communications, particularly the use of article publication charges (APCs), and determine their sustainability.

As the cost of open access continues to dominate the agenda for institutions, policy makers and funders it is essential that publishers are involved in the debates so we can ensure sustainability and adapt business models for the future.

As a part of this project, we will conduct research amongst our members to help quantify just exactly what goes into open access publishing from the publisher perspective in as representative way as possible. The results will be shared with members in due course, but if you have any questions in the meantime, please contact audrey.mcculloch@alpsp.org.

Notes
The project partnership includes the ten University of California campuses and three other major research libraries (Harvard University, Ohio State University and the University of British Columbia). Additional collaborators include information providers Elsevier (Scopus) and Thomson Reuters (Web of Science), and the Association of Professional and Learned Society Publishers, whose membership includes several hundred scholarly publishers.
