
Dean Smith

Dean Smith is director of Duke University Press. He has over 35 years of extensive publishing experience, covering scholarly, STM, university press, and trade- and association-based organizations. He was previously director of Cornell University Press and director of Project MUSE. He brings a wealth of understanding in leading digital publishing initiatives, business development and acquisition skills, open-access publishing, global sales and marketing expertise, and strategic planning skills. Smith is a published author, poet, and freelance journalist. In 2021, he released Baltimore Sons, his second collection of poetry, following his debut work, American Boy (2000), which is available open access. In 2013, Smith published Never Easy, Never Pretty: A Fan, A City, A Championship Season with Temple University Press.
