For most of publishing's history, the reader has been a human being searching, browsing, or being alerted to new research. That's no longer reliably true. AI agents and retrieval systems are now querying, summarizing, and surfacing scholarly content on behalf of humans who never touch the original article, which means publishers are increasingly optimizing for a non-human audience without having fully reckoned with it. This session asks what "publishing for machines" actually requires: structured, machine-readable content and metadata that AI systems can parse accurately, licensing and access questions around AI systems ingesting and repackaging scholarly work, and the risk that content structured well for a human reader is invisible or misread by the AI agent standing between that reader and the research. It's a shift in audience, not just workflow, and it changes what "discoverability" and "readership" even mean.
