This course provides an essential introduction to copyright law and how it is used in practice. Delegates will gain an understanding of the key copyright grants, how these rights are licensed, and all other copyright issues key to the publishing industry. The final section of the course will focus on Gen AI and its relationship with copyright.

  • Learn the territorial differences in key defences, exceptions, or limitations to copyright 
  • Know how to ensure that moral rights are protected 
  • Understand permission systems and Reproduction Rights Organizations (RROs) 
  • Understand Open Access/Creative Commons licences and how they function 
  • Examine copyright rules around linking, emailing, and other basic business activities 
  • Gain insight into how works are licensed in both OA and non-OA outlets.

  • Managing permissions: what to ask and what to record 
  • When you don’t need permission: ‘Fair dealing’ and ‘Fair use’ provisions 
  • Making permissions easier: blanket licences, bilateral agreements and outsourcing
  • AI and copyright
