One in three meetings are not nearly as productive as they could be, and only 50% of members actively contribute. Most editorial board meetings have broad agendas and try to cover everything, but very few decisions are actually made. This course will provide you with the essential practical knowledge and skills to improve how your board operates, understand more about how to motivate your board members, and make your meetings highly effective where everyone contributes and all necessary decisions are reached.

Please note: Delegates will not receive a recording of the training course. Read helpful information for delegates attending.

Who should attend?

This course is for publishers and managing/publishing/academic editors responsible for editorial boards and running editorial board meetings, either directly (as chair) or indirectly. As it will assume some prior knowledge and experience of editorial boards, the course is particularly aimed at editors with at least one to two years’ experience.

What will you learn?

Have the skills to create a high performing editorial board; identify how your editorial board is performing; prioritise areas that will improve performance and develop a strategy to implement change; easily build effective partnerships and influence others.

Programme

  • Identifying the five areas that will make your editorial board more effective
  • Find out how your editorial board compares to others
  • Setting expectation and objectives for the editorial board
  • How to get buy-in from all members, and ensure everyone stays engaged
  • How governance can change the way your board operates for the better
  • How to influence with confidence during virtual and face-to-face meetings.

Testimonials

This was a very well-structured and delivered course, headed up by two excellent and experienced tutors. It provides a strategic overview to managing and influencing editorial boards, the importance and benefits of this, and then leads into very practical detail; all of which leaves you equipped to apply the techniques. I fully recommend this course." Jason Mitchell, Beilstein-Institut

The second session was particularly useful for me, particularly considering how to build trust with editors and how to better understand what their communication styles and values are. I also found the health check in the first session a useful tool; hadn't considered many of the questions on there before and they'll be something to reflect on moving forward.” Amelia Macho, British Ecological Society

I like how it was practically focused on things that we can directly implement. The mix of whole group, breakout rooms etc. kept up momentum and interest." Chris Peribor, CABI
