Our client is a well-established international scholarly publisher with a rapidly expanding portfolio of high-quality Open Access journals spanning the scientific disciplines. Working with leading universities, research institutions, academic societies and researchers around the world, the organisation is focused on increasing the global visibility and impact of high-quality scientific research.

As Publishing Director, you will lead and develop a team of journal publishers while taking overall responsibility for the strategic direction, performance and continued development of the portfolio.

You will combine portfolio strategy, journal development, team leadership and stakeholder engagement, identifying opportunities to strengthen existing titles while supporting the development of new publishing opportunities.

Acting as a senior ambassador for the portfolio, you will build influential relationships across the international research community and work closely with editors, researchers, academic institutions, societies and internal teams.

This is a senior publishing leadership position offering the opportunity to shape the strategy, development and growth of a portfolio of journals operating across some of the most dynamic and rapidly evolving areas of interdisciplinary research.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Develop and implement the publishing strategy for a growing portfolio of interdisciplinary science journals.
2. Lead, coach and develop a team of journal publishers, creating a collaborative and high-performing environment.
3. Drive the development, positioning and international growth of existing journals.
4. Identify opportunities for new journal launches, partnerships and portfolio expansion.
5. Build strong relationships with Editors-in-Chief, editorial boards, researchers, academic institutions and other key stakeholders.
6. Monitor developments across scientific research, Open Access and scholarly communications to identify emerging opportunities.
7. Use market insight, publishing data and portfolio performance indicators to inform strategic decisions.
8. Strengthen the international visibility, reputation and impact of the journal portfolio.
9. Work collaboratively across editorial, marketing, production, technology and other publishing functions.
10. Take responsibility for budgets and P&L performance across the portfolio.
11. Represent the organisation at conferences, institutional meetings and other international industry and academic events.

About You:

We are looking for an established STM publishing professional with significant experience in journal publishing and a strong understanding of the evolving Open Access landscape.

You will ideally bring:

1. A Master’s degree or PhD.
2. At least 6 years’ experience within STM journal publishing.
3. Strong knowledge of and enthusiasm for Open Access publishing.
4. Previous experience leading and developing publishing teams.
5. A track record of developing and executing successful journal or portfolio strategies.
6. Strong commercial awareness, including budget and P&L management experience.
7. The ability to identify new publishing opportunities and translate ideas into effective strategies.
8. Excellent relationship-building, communication and networking skills.
9. Experience working successfully within international and matrix organisations.
10. A collaborative leadership style with strong coaching and people-development skills.
11. Fluency in both Chinese and English.
