Morgan Healey Exclusive

Location: Europe/Germany

Salary: €48,000 – €60,000 depending on experience

We require an experienced Editorial Operations Manager to help shape the future of research publishing workflows.

The organisation has developed a publisher-neutral platform that enables academic institutions, libraries and research organisations to manage the complete publishing journey, from manuscript submission through to publication. By bringing together editorial workflow, peer review, research integrity, and production into a single platform, the business is helping institutions gain greater visibility, efficiency, and control over their publishing activities.

This is an exciting opportunity to join an early-stage business at a pivotal point in its growth. As one of the first operational hires, you will have significant influence over how editorial processes are designed, implemented and continuously improved.

The Editorial Operations Manager will take ownership of the editorial workflow that underpins the platform, ensuring that every stage of the manuscript lifecycle reflects industry best practice while delivering an efficient and intuitive experience for users.

Working closely with product, operations and specialist service providers, you will act as the in-house editorial expert, translating real-world publishing requirements into scalable workflows and operational improvements

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Own and continuously improve the end-to-end editorial workflow, from manuscript submission through editorial assessment, research integrity checks, peer review, editorial decision-making and production handover.
  2. Act as the subject matter expert for scholarly editorial processes, ensuring workflows align with recognised publishing standards and best practice.
  3. Support editorial teams using the platform, resolving workflow issues and establishing effective operating procedures.
  4. Collaborate with specialist delivery partners involved in areas such as research integrity, reviewer recruitment and production, ensuring seamless integration across the publishing lifecycle.
  5. Work alongside Product and Operations teams to translate editorial requirements into product enhancements and workflow improvements.
  6. Maintain high standards of editorial quality, research integrity and compliance throughout the publishing process.
  7. Help document, optimise and standardise editorial operations as the platform continues to scale.

Skills & Experience:

  1. You will have a strong background in scholarly or academic publishing and be passionate about improving editorial workflows through technology.
  2. Significant experience in scholarly publishing within Editorial Operations, Managing Editor, Journal Operations or a similar role.
  3. Comprehensive understanding of the complete editorial lifecycle, including manuscript submission, editorial assessment, research integrity, peer review, editorial decisions and production.
  4. Strong process improvement skills with the ability to translate complex editorial practices into efficient operational workflows.
  5. Experience working with publishing technologies and collaborating with software or product development teams.
  6. Excellent organisational, communication and stakeholder management skills

Desirable Experience:

  1. Experience using manuscript submission or editorial management systems such as OJS, ScholarOne, Editorial Manager or similar platforms.
  2. Knowledge of publication ethics, research integrity and COPE best practices.
  3. Exposure to production workflows, XML publishing or content preparation processes.
  4. Experience working with third-party editorial service providers or publishing technology vendors.
