Andrea Baier

British Ecological Society

Andrea is Director of Publishing and Sustainability at the British Ecological Society where she oversees the Society’s portfolio of hybrid and gold Open Access journals and the grey literature platform Applied Ecology Resources. With a background in Plant Sciences from universities in Austria and the USA, she has over 20 years’ experience in scientific publishing, ranging from book commissioning in biomedical and life sciences at Wiley to all aspect of journal editorial work at the BES.

Andrea has been involved in the implementation of mandatory data archiving on the Society’s journals and has led journal business model transitions to Open Access as well as the change to double-anonymized peer review following a multi-year controlled experiment.

As a member of the Senior Leadership team supporting the BES Board of Trustees, Andrea has gained wide-ranging experience from organisation-wide decision making and strategy development & execution to long-term financial management. More recently, leading the environmental sustainability work at the Society, her insights into organisational operations have deepened, as has her appreciation of partnership working to achieve common goals. In that vein, she is serving on Wiley’s Research Exchange Advisory Board, providing strategic input on the platform's development and evolution together with representatives of other partner-published Societies.

ALPSP has been an invaluable source of information, training and networking throughout Andrea’s career and an important advocate for academic publishing and publishers of all shapes and sizes. She is keen to play a more active role to support the important work of ALPSP at this exciting time for the industry.
