Edgar Schouten

Knowledge Architect

Edgar is a Knowledge Architect at Elsevier, with a background in content modelling and experience in scholarly publishing operations. Their work focuses on standardising and structuring scholarly content in digital first publishing environments with high interoperability. They worked within Elsevier’s Operations organisation, where they got some a practical understanding of production workflows and the challenges of delivering content reliably and at scale in cooperation with suppliers. They have a strong interest in improving inclusive and equitable access to scholarly content. They have made contributions to the development of Elsevier’s XML schemas and DTDs, which are closely related with the Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS). In addition, they were involved in the development of the Content Profile/Linked Document Standard, published by NISO as Z39.105 2023, which supports clear separation between the content of the article, the metadata and all of the enriching annotations.
