Duncan Campbell
Non-Executive Director
I am currently Executive Director, Sales & Account Management at Copyright Clearance Center, where I lead the publisher sales function, as well as working on rightsholder account management & government relations.
I started my career as a commissioning editor at the University of Wales Press, and have since then worked in progressively more senior roles across sales, licensing & business development, product management and policy/government affairs with companies such as Wiley and ProQuest. My primary interests are in intellectual property, commercial strategy and technology policy, especially relating to artificial intelligence.
Outside that, I also have substantial board experience with non-profits, membership organizations and collective licensing. I’ve been a board member at Crossref, IPRO (International Publishers Rights Organization), and IFRRO (International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organizations), and was the publisher co-chair of the CLOCKSS Digital Archive from 2017 to 2023. I have been a member (and was formerly vice-chair) of the ALPSP Policy Committee for many years, and represent ALPSP on the UK Joint Committee on Legal Deposit. In addition, I’m also the Chair of Seren Books (Poetry Wales Press), a literary publisher based in Wales (2025 Regional & Country Small Press Winner at the British Book Awards).
I have deep experience of developing, delivering & monitoring strategic plans at both executive and board level, as well as experience of financial oversight at all levels from product P&Ls to business-level financial statements and accounts. In my roles as Chair at both CLOCKSS and Seren Books I have ensured that board governance is aligned with current best practice, provides transparency for stakeholders, and that the board works to support, encourage and where necessary challenge the executive team.
During my career, I have worked across all types of publishing organizations: commercial, non-profit, trade, academic, print, digital, privately- or publicly-owned, and believe in the fundamental importance of diversity in the scholarly publishing ecosystem – whether that’s in terms of diversity of voice, experience or mission. I was a founder member of the STM Early Career Publishers Committee, which works to support new voices in the industry.
I am passionate about the value and importance of publishing and copyright for promoting innovation and transformation, and trade associations such as ALPSP are essential in ensuring that the creative industries are supported and enabled to flourish despite increasing external pressures. ALPSP does a fantastic job promoting and supporting academic and scholarly communications in all its forms, and I believe I have the strengths, skills and experience to support ALPSP in the delivery of its mission.
