About Redux

The 2018 University Press Redux Conference was curated and hosted by UCL Press with support provided by ALPSP.

Following the success of the founding University Press Redux conference in 2016, organised by Liverpool University Press (LUP), The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) announced that they will now be partnering with university presses to deliver the event every two years.  The 2018 University Press Redux conference took place over two full days and was held at The British Library, 96 Euston Road, London, NW1 2DB on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 February.

At the inaugural University Press Redux conference, more than 150 delegates from a range of presses - large and small, commercial, open access, library-based, UK, US, and European -  and associated industries, heard the views of authors, funders, students, librarians, and some of the most dynamic figures in university press publishing, and gathered to discuss the past, present and future of institutional presses. Anthony Cond, Director of Liverpool University Press said: ‘There was such strong support for the conference that we immediately saw the potential to continue the conversation.’

Audrey McCulloch, Chief Executive of ALPSP said: ‘The university press sector has undergone a transformation and revitalisation worldwide. Many of our members were involved in the Redux conference and it was an obvious next step to offer administrative support. We are delighted to be involved.’

The University Press Redux Conference provides a new forum in the UK for university presses to gather and share their experiences and the challenges they face in their unique position as representatives of higher education institutions operating in a commercial world. The models adopted by university presses are many and varied and they range in size from one member of staff to several thousand. But what they all share is a desire to promote the best in scholarship.

Redux 2018 gathered university presses and affiliated organisations from all over the world, and covered a range of topics affecting scholarly publishing including higher education policy, open access, industry supply chains, journals publishing, digital innovation, library supply and acquisition, media and publicity, trade publishing, bookselling, author engagement and the all-important relationship with the parent institution. This varied conference appeals to staff in all functions and at all levels in university presses and related activities, and provides a wonderful opportunity to learn about practices from around the world and to hear about the latest developments in scholarly publishing that are shaping the way we work now and in the future.
