Introduction to People Management in Publishing

Overview

Becoming a manager can be daunting for even the most accomplished people in publishing. Fortunately, management is a skill like any other that can be learnt and developed through self-awareness and practice. This course offers new and developing managers a framework and approach to help support the transition into management, along with plenty of practical tips and tools to help them master the essentials and build confidence. Throughout, delegates will be encouraged to share their own experiences and to explore new ideas and techniques through practical exercises and case studies, all grounded in the context of real-world publishing.

What will you learn?

The course will support new and developing managers to:

  • understand and deploy active and self-aware management
  • navigate their new responsibilities, and
  • use the tools and techniques needed to master some of the most common management tasks like recruitment, goal-setting and giving feedback.

Delegates will also be encouraged to explore and continue their development as managers via an end of course personal development plan.

Who should attend (Level 1-2)

This is a one-day course for first-time managers in publishing. It’s also a useful refresher for managers who may not have had any formal training or would like a reminder of their core responsibilities and guidance on how best to meet them.

Tutors

 Clare Grist Taylor, Publisher

Clare Grist TaylorClare is a publisher of 35 years standing. She has worked in academic, professional and trade sectors, publishing everything from trade books to large-scale online reference works.  She started her publishing career at Pergamon Press, was European editorial director at Prentice Hall, managing director of ICSA Publishing and business and operations director at Profile Books. She now works for herself, helping people to tell their stories as an agent and editor and sharing what she knows through training and mentoring. She is a course leader at the Publishing Training Centre, an Independent Publishers Guild mentor, a Sub-Committee member at the University of Wales Press and a trustee of the Montgomeryshire Literary Festival.  

Nancy Roberts, Director, Business Inclusivity and Founder & CEO, Umbrella

Nancy Roberts photoNancy worked in publishing for over 20 years in a variety of production and operations roles, following on from the completion of her postgraduate publishing diploma at West Herts College. Until 2017 she was Global Operations Director, Academic, at Cambridge University Press. Nancy founded Business Inclusivity in 2017 to support publishers in thinking about how we can use diversity and inclusion to solve business problems and deliver a sustainable industry. Business Inclusivity is a social enterprise meaning profits are reinvested in the business to enable broader access to support. In May 2018 she also launched Umbrella, a data analytics platform currently in development, which will allow businesses to quantify diversity and inclusion and take concrete actions. As well as working on diversity and inclusion strategies, she also provides personal coaching and leadership development, and is Head of Technology and Content at Maverick. She has a PhD in Postcolonial Feminist Literary Theory and is currently an EMBA student at Cranfield University.
