Overview

Plan S, developed by the European Commission in partnership with Science Europe, seeks to move to a world where all research findings are made Open Access (OA). As the number of researchers covered by Plan S-compliant funding grows, it will put pressure on the business models of many learned societies which rely their publishing programmes to generate revenue for other important activities they undertake such as hosting meetings/conferences and awarding fellowships and other grants.

As part of a partnership between ALPSP, Wellcome and UKRI, Information Power was engaged to explore a range of potential strategies and business models through which learned societies can transition to Open Access. The project, entitled Society Publishers Accelerating Open Access and Plan S (SPA-OPS) was completed in September and the report and toolkit, launched at the ALPSP annual conference is published here.

ALPSP is now pleased to host a panel led discussion for ALPSP members - to hear from society publishers and consortia who have set up transformative agreements - what were the key issues and how have these been addressed.  There will be plenty of time for questions and debate.

The evening will be chaired by Deborah Dixon and the Chatham House Rule will apply.
