Over the last few years the focus on building the academic 'brand' has increased, with many HE Institutions now running sessions for their PhD students and early career researchers on best practice in creating an online profile and presence within their virtual communities. Helping an academic author understand the importance of this type of profile, combined with where their work is being found on the internet, read and cited from, is of major benefit to the publisher.

What you will learn

Understand why you should invest time in assisting your academic authors to brand build their own academic profiles (the 'author brand') and the importance of this activity both for the author and for the publisher. This webinar will look at the importance of correct social media profiling for the academic author and also explore how the publisher can harness discoverability tools to use that data, alongside traditional ORCID and DOI numbers, to build the author profile, better understand readers of the work, and better inform their own marketing and content dissemination strategies. 

Who should attend?

Everyone in scholarly publishing who wishes to better understand how to inform and educate their own academic authors in how to create their own 'author brand' in the online community. The webinar will seek to better inform publishers of the positive benefits of integrating social media and discoverability metrics into their strategy. Typically all marketing staff including marketing managers, marketing executives, communications professionals concerned with content dissemination and discoverability channels, all editorial staff.

Biography: Jean Dawson has over 25 years’ experience in senior management roles in publishing across the industry from academic publishing, start-ups, to publishing service providers. Commencing her career at Oxford University Press, she moved to form part of the Ingram UK Business start-up team. Prior to joining The Charlesworth Group, Jean worked as a consultant providing product development and marketing services to trade and academic publishers. Jean is also an active participant in cross industry membership groups.

Helping Researchers Take a Strategic Approach to Dissemination and Reputation
Each year, over £1 trillion is invested in research and more than 2 million outputs are published. It’s estimated that 50% of these are never used or read. Funders are recognizing this, and beginning to expect up to 10% of research grants to be allocated to skills, capacity and activities that drive better uptake of and engagement with research. Authors can and must take a more active approach to ensuring their work finds its audience - from building their personal brand and digital profile, to more strategically disseminating research objects and outputs throughout the research cycle. This talk will provide background insight into researchers’ behaviour, a snapshot of the funder context, evidence of the value of promoting work, and tips about selecting the most effective tools and channels.

Biography: Charlie Rapple is co-founder of Kudos, which helps researchers, publishers and institutions to maximize the reach and impact of their research. She is also a member of the Learned Publishing and Insights editorial boards and a blogger in The Scholarly Kitchen. Past roles include Associate Director of TBI Communications and Head of Group Marketing for Publishing Technology. She holds a BA from the University of Bristol and postgraduate MDip from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

How to Build a Scholarly Brand with Social Media
Social media has had a huge impact on the way information is communicated today.  This is also true for academic works such as journal articles, monographs, data sets and even other types of academic content.  No longer can a publisher or an author just sit back passively and let content collect citations.  These parties need to be active participants in this new information age and share in the workload of engaging scholarly communities who have conversations about research online.  Throughout this presentation we will discuss why these social channels are still rising in importance, go over some tips and tricks to get started with social media and teach participants how to measure their social media outreach efforts.

Biography: Cathy Holland works for Digital Science as a Business Development Manager in the publishing space.  She works with publishers to help them implement innovative technologies which give them a greater view into the research landscape.  Cathy is a member of SSP and participates in their mentorship program.  Prior to coming to work for Digital Science she worked at AAAS/Science in many roles within their site license division, the most recent as an Institutional Sales Manager.  She holds a BS in Biology from Marymount University.
