Webinars the chosen format for Redux Online

Redux Online – the virtual replacement for this year’s Redux Conference – is to be run as a series of webinars.

Organisers, The Association of Learned & Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) and Cambridge University Press, chose the format after consulting with the speakers and session chairs about how best to adapt to the needs of people during the current pandemic.

Mandy Hill, Managing Director of Academic Publishing at Cambridge University Press, said: “We moved Redux 2020 online to recognise the hard work many people have already put in and to generate positive results from a difficult situation. Having spoken to chairs and speakers we settled on webinars as the best way to do that.

“This way, no-one has to commit to a week of sessions while things are so uncertain, we can run each session at a time that best suits the most people, and we can promote the sessions and the conference overall for far longer.”

The first session on 23 April will be Monographs, open access and public policy: UKRI OA consultation 2020 chaired by Sarah Faulder, Chief Executive of Publishers’ Licensing Services, with speakers Helen Snaith of Research England and Richard Fisher of Yale University Press. It will cover the UKRI Open Access review and the proposed new Open Access policy for monographs, book chapters and edited collections. The discussion is a timely one, with UKRI currently seeking views on its proposed Open Access policy via a consultation closing on 29 May.

There will be ample opportunity for audience engagement via a live question and answer session, and a recording will be available on Cambridge Open Engage, the Press’s new early and open content and collaboration platform, in June.

Wayne Sime, Chief Executive of ALPSP, said: “We hope that the open nature of the webinars will mean much higher attendance at the sessions themselves. We are excited about this new approach and the ability to deliver some truly valuable sessions in a format that is both considerate and responsive to the current environment.

“We have had lots of interest for this idea from the original session organisers, and would hope to line up at least five more webinars over the course of the coming months, and quite possibly some other sessions too, though this is of course dependent on our speakers.”

As this year’s event has moved online, another joint Cambridge University Press and ALPSP Redux conference is now planned in Cambridge for 2022.
