Description

Context of the role

  • No direct or indirect reports
  • National and international travel
  • Involvement with preparing and managing part of the journal’s budget (travel/editorial board expenses/journal sponsorship)

Accountabilities

  • To assist the Executive Editor and Editorial Production Manager to maximise the impact and quality of the journal and deliver the journals KPI’s.
  • To deputise for the Executive Editor.
  • To assist the Executive Editor in defining and implementing the Editorial Policy in collaboration with Editorial Board(s) to develop the product.
  • To assist the Executive Editor in developing the Editorial and Advisory Boards and Scientific/Associate Editors such that they provide the maximum benefit to the serial(s) and strong interactions with their communities.
  • To assist in the development and implementation of the product development plans, in association with the Executive Editor and the Publisher, to maintain or improve the circulation/revenue/quality/usage of the journal and deliver the journals KPI’s.
  • To assist in developing and implementing the products commissioning plan in consultation with the Executive Editor.
  • To develop and maintain good relationships with existing and potential authors, referees and customers.
  • To commission articles, via desk based research and attendance at scientific conferences in order to maintain, improve and develop the quality of the product.
  • To assist the Executive Editor in the identification and recruitment of external Associate Editors.
  • To assist the Executive Editor in supporting and monitoring the manuscript processing and promotional activities of any external Associate Editors in order to improve the quality and standing of the journals.
  • In consultation with the Executive Editor and the Marketing team to develop and implement author marketing activities that support the commissioning and content development plans. 
  • To monitor the demands of market forces and advise the Executive Editor and Publisher of future trends in all areas to ensure that the Royal Society of Chemistry takes full advantage of all business opportunities.
  • To collaborate with colleagues in the identification and development of new business opportunities, particularly with the Publisher, Books and the Business Development team.
  • Required to work on cross-departmental project teams from time to time.
  • To ensure that every effort is made to progress our publishing strategy for core and new product development and technical development.

Knowledge and skills required

Essential:

  • A good honours degree in science (chemical science normally preferred) is essential.
  • Previous experience in STM publishing
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to work well as a team.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills are required together with the ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines
  • Desirable
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and passion for the chemical sciences would be an asset.
  • Previous commissioning experience and conference attendance
