The Journals Manager (Technical Communications Specialist 4) will oversee all aspects of the journals department: editorial, financial, production, distribution, and fulfillment (currently outsourced). As the face of the press, the Journals Manager will communicate with editors regarding major issues such as pricing and subscriptions. With press director, negotiate and execute agreements. Provide final cost information to press director and unit-cost information to business manager. The Journals Manager is a member of press leadership team.

 Job Description and Position Requirements

Penn State University Press seeks a dynamic and experienced individual to manage its vigorous and expanding journals program. The position of Technical Communications Specialist will oversee the Penn State University Press journals program and department.

Duties will include creating and implementing its business development strategy, P&L responsibility for its portfolio of eighty journals, negotiating pricing from vendors, supervising journal department staff, working closely with outside editors to ensure on time publication and maintain editorial quality, and assisting the director in evaluating financial models for acquiring new journals.

The successful candidate will possess a thorough knowledge of all aspects of journal publishing:

  • Business development
  • Editorial and peer-review
  • Production, print and electronic publication
  • Marketing
  • Revenue sources and costs

The position demands exceptional communication skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with vendors, editors, and editorial offices, including educators and administrators at universities around the world.

Familiarity with software programs for managing journals, such as Aries’s Editorial Manager® or VirtuSales’s Biblio is a plus. Management responsibilities include working with a staff of five full-time employees to ensure on-time, quality publications.

As a department head within the larger press organization, the Journals Manager plays an important strategic role in fulfilling the overall mission of the press. The position requires some overnight travel to industry events such as the Charleston Library Conference or the Association of University Press’s annual meeting, or the Society for Scholarly Publishing. The position will need to be based locally, even though the press is currently working remotely. Typically requires 6+ years related experience, Bachelor’s Degree or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
