We have an opportunity for two Editorial Assistants, Journals (one permanent and one temporary maternity cover) to join our Publishing team in a critical support role, providing administrative support to an Executive Editor and their team with a range of commissioning activities.

Your responsibilities will focus on:

• Retrieving data from databases, sending electronic mailings via Maxemail, carrying out times to publication and competitor analyses and updating the journal blogs.
• Responding to general queries from potential authors, including in response to commissioning activities, by managing the shared journal mailboxes.
• Arranging Editorial Board meetings, including booking venues, arranging travel and accommodation for Editorial Board members. Maintaining and updating Editorial and Advisory Board lists.
• Providing administrative support for the Executive Editors and their teams for external activities. This may include collating statistics, organising materials and prizes for conference exchange agreements and liaising with the travel team over travel arrangements.
• Liaising with Associate Editors over marketing and promotional activities, and providing general assistance with marketing activities, as well as carrying out CMS work..
• Arranging Associate Editor payments, and processing Editorial Board expenses.
• Providing cover for the other Editorial Assistant(s) when absent and assisting them with administrative duties, to ensure the smooth running of the Journals Department.
• Undertaking other reasonable duties and projects as required by the Executive Editor and Publishers and their team(s) as appropriate.
• Ensuring that every effort is made to progress the RSC’s Publishing strategy for core and new product development, and technical innovation.

We are looking for:

Essential

• Previous administration experience
• Efficiency and competence in the use of software packages associated with PCs
• Very good organisation and time-management skills, together with the ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines
• Good communications skills and proven ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Desirable

• Previous experience in Scientific, Technical and Medical (STM) publishing

We are looking for an individual with significant experience in STM publishing with the ability to perform the departmental manager role for the external production processes for our Journals on a temporary maternity cover basis.

You will be responsible for the management of the out-sourcing of production activities, which will include the management and performance management of a number of suppliers and their associated contracts.

The successful candidate will demonstrate extensive knowledge of all aspects of journal production processes including XML and associated workflows, which you will apply to ensure that production policies are implemented consistently across the department to high standards. You will also have responsibility for some of our internal production support teams, and will lead a team of 4 direct reports and up to 30 indirect reports covering the Supplier Relations team, the Customer Services Manager teams, the Copy Editing team and the Publishing Assistant team.   A high degree of skill in management, motivation and development are needed to make a successful impact in this role.

• A good honours degree in science (chemical science normally preferred) is essential.

This is a great opportunity to join our publishing management team overseeing the operational activities of our open access journals. As an Editorial Production Manager, leading a team of Publishing Editors, you will contribute to the strategic development of our open access journals, by managing the day-to-day operation of the peer review and publishing processes. You will ensure the journals in your team continue to meet their strategic objectives and deliver excellent customer service for our authors.

Your responsibilities will focus on:

• Managing a team of Publishing Editors, Journals to deliver KPIs in line with the departmental and journal strategies, leading and motivating the team to deliver excellent customer service.
• Managing the team’s workflow from manuscript submission to final publication and ensuring that best practice and a standardised workflow is followed.
• Collaborating with Editorial Production Managers, Journals, Senior Editor, Chemical Science, and the Executive Editors, Supplier Relations Manager and Copy Editing Manager over the coordination of the departmental workflow.
• Working closely with the Executive Editor, Journals to maximise the impact and quality of the journals and deliver KPIs in line with the journal and departmental strategies, and to ensure that submitted articles are reviewed to individual journal’s standards and quality based on the journal’s strategy.
• Overseeing the operation of external Associate Editors.
• Carrying out the publication of RSC journals, including journal issue management, themed issues, and associated tasks to ensure the rapid publication of articles accepted for publication to agreed standards.
• Managing ethical cases, working closely with the Publishing Manager, Quality & Ethics, Publishing Ethics Specialist and the Executive Editor, Journals, following COPE guidelines.

We are looking for

Accountabilities

To assist in the development and implementation of journal development plans – together with the Deputy Editor, Journals; Executive Editor, Journals; and Publisher, Journals – to maintain or improve the quality and quantity of articles submitted for publication, the readership and online usage, and revenue of the journals and deliver journal Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Commissioning (Directly inviting authors to publish):

• To support the team’s commissioning, content development and marketing activities.
• To identify commissioning leads through desk-based research.
• To commission articles in order to maintain, improve and develop the quality of the products.
• To collaborate with Marketing on promotional materials. 

Community interactions:

• To develop and maintain good relationships and excellent channels of communication with existing and potential authors, referees, Board members and customers.
• To maintain and develop the journals’ online presence via social networks, in collaboration with the Executive Editor, Journals; Deputy Editor, Journals; and the Marketing team.
• To attend Editorial Board meetings, when appropriate.

Strategic Development of the Journals’ Portfolio:

• To input to the journals’ strategic plans.
• To support the portfolio development through data analysis (e.g. bibliometrics, usage).
