Description

Penn State University Press seeks a dynamic and experienced individual to manage the production of its vigorous and expanding journals program. Reporting to the journals manager, the production manager will manage all production processes from receipt of accepted manuscripts through the print and digital publication of all journals.

Overseeing two production coordinators, the position is responsible for the current list of 85 journals. Duties include setting and adhering to production schedules; ensuring an ongoing workflow of manuscripts and proofs among editors, copyeditors, compositors, and printers; maintaining the journal’s database for annual journal records, schedules, contact details, and reporting; integrating new journal acquisitions into the workflow as needed; and archiving. The production manager should have a solid grasp of basic copyright law, understand online editorial workflows, and know how to prepare digital files for transfer to platforms for publication. The position oversees external copy editors, project managers, and vendors for composition, printing, and online dissemination. Together with the journals manager, the production manager determines print-runs and maintains departmental records (invoices, editorial contracts, permissions, and production status).

Position requirements

The successful candidate will possess a thorough knowledge of all aspects of journal publishing: business development, editorial and peer-review, production, print and electronic publication, marketing, revenue sources, and costs. The position demands exceptional communication skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with vendors, editors, and editorial offices, including educators and administrators at universities around the world. Familiarity with software programs for managing journals, such as Aries’s Editorial Manager® or VirtuSales’s Biblio is a plus. Management responsibilities include overseeing two production coordinators to ensure on-time, quality publications. The position will need to be based locally, even though the press is currently working remotely. Penn State University Press is a multicultural environment that values mutual respect, civility and diversity.
