PLOS is looking for a Publisher, Open Research to join its publishing team and lead the conceptualization and development of new products and services to complement and add value to the PLOS portfolio, contributing to PLOS’ mission and sustainability.

Reporting to the Publisher & Executive Editor, this role focuses on new publishing solutions that promote Open Science and is a thought partner for the senior editorial and publishing leadership in their respective efforts to expand the reach of PLOS. This role supports PLOS strategy by identifying and developing new products that add value to the scientific and scholarly community at the same time as growing and diversifying revenue streams.

The role is based in one of the PLOS offices, in San Francisco, USA, or in Cambridge, UK.


  • Lead the market research and collaborate across the organization to collect market intelligence and information about researchers needs to facilitate and get credit for the practice of open science, in particular the sharing of data, code, methods and other non-traditional research outputs to expand the continuum of published research. Based on trends and emerging opportunities, develop actionable recommendations for new products, services and/or augmentation of existing titles.
  • Collaborate closely with the Senior Editorial and Publishing leadership to fully integrate these activities in the PLOS-wide portfolio strategy and cross-journal initiatives.
  • Establish business plans for new products and services that grow and diversify revenue streams and optimize PLOS value to the scientific community.
  • In partnership with PLOS technology leadership, identify and evaluate potential partners and technology solutions to support new products; develop integration plans with the technology teams.
  • Lead the implementation plan for the launch of new products.
  • Take P&L responsibility for new products and services as they launch; monitor performance and adjust execution as necessary.
  • Develop and provide oversight for low-cost experiments to test new markets and new product concepts. When relevant, seek funding for experiments through grant applications and external partnerships.
  • Actively represent PLOS at industry and academic events, as a thought leader and advocate for Open Science.
  • Maintain productive and dynamic relationships with all PLOS journal teams and with the Outreach and technology department.

Qualification and experience:

  • A degree in science, with significant (8+ years) of STM publishing experience.  
  • Demonstrated success in the development and launch of new products and/or services.
  • Thorough understanding of the scientific process and the publishing processes and policies in STM.
  • Sound knowledge of budgets, accounts and cost management and ability to apply this knowledge to new business development.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills to plan and manage resource allocation and budgets to agreed plans, reporting and acting according to changing circumstances.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to quickly gather and synthesize information across many aspects of the business.
  • An approachable manager with a strong history of team oversight and talent development; known for an ability to coach and grow talent, providing vision and bringing people along.
  • Wide interest in science and scientists and demonstrated ability to engage in productive relationships with them.
  • Dedication to open access, open science and transforming scholarly communication.
