PLOS has engaged Jack Farrell & Associates to find the winning candidate for this position. Reporting to the Executive Editor, the Journals Publishing Director has overall responsibility for the business management of six PLOS journals and for an experienced editorial team. Through close contact with the scientific community and other key stakeholders, the Journals Publishing Director will be responsible for ensuring that PLOS journals maintain and grow their profile and for identifying and developing new opportunities globally.

The role is based in Cambridge, UK, and assumes oversight responsibility as the Head of the PLOS Cambridge office.

Key responsibilities:

Management responsibilities

  • Oversee the four PLOS Community Journals, PLOS Biology and PLOS Medicine, including business management, P&L responsibility and line management of Editorial and Editorial Services teams.
  • As Head of the Cambridge office, champion matters of primary importance for the UK office in organizational strategy, establish effective channels of communication between the UK and US offices, guide policy, processes and other internal activities to the UK office, maintain a culture built on teamwork and the highest level of personal ethics and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Maintain productive and dynamic relationships with the Community Journals Editors-in-Chief.
  • Ensure operational efficiency for the six-journal program, and champion journal-level and cross-journal initiatives to optimize author and reader experience, competitive positioning, and publication of quality submissions within PLOS.
  • Ensure that all relevant new policies, processes, workflows and systems are maximally efficient, harmonized wherever possible and customer-focused.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across PLOS, ensuring excellent communication so that the journals team across functions is working towards our core objectives.
  • Champion the journals scientific integrity and objectivity, and PLOS editorial independence policy. According to this policy, the Journal Publishing Director should not interfere in the assessment, selection, or editing of journal articles, and the Chief Editors have dotted line reporting to the Executive Editors for matters pertaining to editorial quality and integrity.

Business responsibilities

  • Establish and execute the publishing strategy for the six journals; optimizing revenue growth, editorial quality, cost control and scalable efficiencies.
  • Working with the Executive Editor and CFO, develop and monitor appropriate metrics to track portfolio performance on a regular basis.
  • Lead the annual budget and forecasting of the journals revenues and costs, and the continued development and optimization of their business models.
  • Identify and engage with external partners to increase submissions and develop business opportunities, while maintaining the integrity of PLOS editorial values, and working closely with the Publishing Development Manager.
  • Champion editorial initiatives working with the research community to contribute to position PLOS as an innovator and thought leader.
  • Working closely with the Chief Marketing Officer and other marketing partners, evaluate and develop opportunities for supporting the journals through advertising and sponsorship.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing department in designing effective marketing and branding campaigns that support organizational objectives for the SIX.

Strategic responsibilities

  • Help chart the evolution of the journal portfolio to continue to improve scholarly communication while promoting editorial quality, and strengthening a prime position within the communities served by the journals.
  • Develop strategies for financial sustainability of the six-journal program to fulfill PLOS mission, and for positioning it across global markets and research disciplines.
  • Represent PLOS at industry and academic events, and with external stakeholders and policy makers as needed.
  • Working closely with the Publisher and Executive Editor, establish and nurture partnership relationships.

Qualification and experience

  • A PhD-level educational background in science or medicine.
  • Proven ability to manage high-performing scientific editorial teams and a thorough understanding of the scientific process as it pertains to STM publishing.
  • A strong, articulate and inspirational leadership style and ability to work effectively with a wide variety of colleagues, in peer-to-peer and management relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to successfully implement new strategies and business plans.
  • Relationship management skills and the authority to achieve the widest-possible buy-in to plans and influence existing and potential external partners.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills, to operate at all levels with internal and external partners and stakeholders.
  • Organisational skill to plan and manage resource allocation and budgets to agreed plans, reporting and acting according to changing circumstances.
  • At least eight years of progressively responsible editorial or publishing experience in STM.
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Wide interest in science and scientists, and demonstrated ability to engage in productive relationships with them.
  • Dedication to open access and transforming scholarly communication.
