PLOS - Executive Director, Technology and Digital Strategy

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Executive Director, Technology and Digital Strategy (EDT) is a key member of PLOS’ executive team and thought partner to the CEO and senior management team. S/he works closely with the CEO and other members of the senior management team to instill a culture of transparency, collaboration and dynamic leadership across the organization.

On a day-to-day basis, the EDT has strategic and managerial responsibility for all aspects of PLOS’ technology strategy and operations (including engineering, IT, and business systems support) and ensures that such activities are conducted in an environment that supports its mission and strategic priorities, and fosters continuous improvement and innovation. Working at the intersection of technology and business, the EDT will not only help to define how technology supports PLOS’ current business but also how technology can create new business and value.

The EDT leads a staff of 22 people across all technology functions. Ideally based in San Francisco, CA (PLOS’ headquarters), some periodic travel is required (Cambridge, UK office of PLOS, Board meetings, other events).


Technology Management and Leadership:

  • Define, plan and implement robust short- and long-term technology vision and strategic plan for PLOS (including overall architecture and selection of technologies) to align with the business and organizational strategy and objectives, especially the delivery of best-in-class author and reader services.
  • Partner with other senior managers to develop robust digital strategy (including content generation, organization, discovery, and syndication) that activates audiences in fresh and innovative ways; translate this into defined tactics and metrics.
  • In partnership with outreach team, identify and deploy appropriate technology solutions to support a robust data strategy.
  • Advise leadership team on new and emerging technologies, digital trends and industry developments relevant to PLOS’s operations and goals; provide recommendations and innovative solutions that contribute to PLOS’s goals, address business needs and further the mission.
  • Lead evaluation of and create plans for current technology platforms, including sunsetting and replacement, ensuring that PLOS has the most appropriate technology to deliver its strategy.
  • Lead the selection of new systems, technologies and vendors, including vendor selection, contract negotiation, issue resolution, etc.
  • Lead vendor interaction and management to ensure project timelines and budgets are met, implementations are successful, and business issues are addressed.
  • Create and manage technology policies, processes, and standards, including those related to service, security, and disaster recovery to ensure efficient and consistent operations, safeguard of systems and data, and monitor compliance.
  • Manage and deliver reliable, efficient and effective technological infrastructure, systems, services, solutions, data and reports to support organizational needs while managing risk and protecting PLOS’s assets.
  • Manage daily IT operations, service delivery, and up-times in accordance with business related and industry standard KPIs and metrics.

Organizational Management and Leadership:

  • Assist in formulating the PLOS's future direction and strategy; support tactical initiatives and participate in key decisions as a member of the Executive Team.
  • Attend and present at PLOS Board meetings and support the CEO in effectively supporting strong relationships with Board Members.
  • Create and manage a high performing team, providing supervision and support to direct reports and with the ability to pitch in and execute hands on when necessary.
  • Evaluate the technology team structure and plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group as well as provide individuals with professional and personal growth with emphasis on opportunities (where possible) of individuals.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Proven experience in a technology leadership role and strong technology experience, including areas such as IT leadership, cloud strategy, enterprise architecture strategy, machine learning and AI.
  • Must maintain deep knowledge of evolving trends and the latest advancements in technology, strategy, and management to develop innovative solutions and approaches.
  • Experience in publishing or an allied digital business strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of Agile and project management methodologies.
  • A proven leader and relationship builder who can provide authoritative leadership while fostering partnership and collaboration with all levels of the organization and its partners.
  • Digitally fluent and confident in speaking to and educating about the rapidly changing digital landscape, including platforms, technology and innovation.
  • Business problem solver – operates with curiosity to get to the root of the business problem to ensure the ultimate solution is grounded in PLOS’ strategy.
  • An all-around seasoned professional with exceptional communication, organizational and time management skills, and the flexibility to adapt quickly to change
  • An approachable manager with a strong history of team oversight and talent development; known for an ability to coach and grow talent, providing vision and bringing people along.
