Description

As Director, Strategic Partnerships (DSP), you are a key member of PLOS’s Senior Management Team. You work closely with the other members of the Senior Management Team and the Executive Team to instill a culture of transparency, collaboration and dynamic leadership across the organization and to further PLOS’s catalytic mission in scientific communication.

On a day-to-day basis, you support PLOS’s strategy by identifying and developing new business and partner opportunities in line with PLOS’s near- and long-term growth strategy with a focus on libraries, institutions, societies and other like-minded publishers. You build a robust pipeline of prospective partners, negotiate and close agreements, manage partners, and drive overall performance. Working closely with cross-functional counterparts across the organization, you ensure that partnerships are executed flawlessly and deliver value to both partners and PLOS.

Ideally based in San Francisco, CA (PLOS’ headquarters), this role involves frequent travel.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze industry trends, financial and competitive data to identify emerging new opportunities and gaps
  • Conceptualize new strategic initiatives that could be built around or benefit from institutional, society, publisher, corporate, foundation, government or other partnerships to enter new markets and/or diversify revenue streams
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to structure and execute partnership initiatives, lead analysis and develop and communicate final recommendations for growing partner relationships
  • Identify potential partners and explore opportunities to build and maintain and robust pipeline
  • Prepare detailed evaluations of pipeline opportunities, including assessments of targets’ business, strategic and mission fit
  • Lead and coordinate internal resources for due diligence of potential transactions
  • Develop and negotiate deal terms for partnership agreements, working closely with the appropriate PLOS stakeholders
  • In partnership with relevant PLOS stakeholders, develop business models to be adaptive and responsive to a changing landscape
  • Drive mutual success for PLOS and partners through effective internal networking and communication with partners and, where relevant, leverage those relationships to greater collective impact
  • Develop systems and procedures in support of the identification, engagement and development of strategic partnerships
  • Promote PLOS as a thought leader with relevant communities and potential partners through participation in meetings, speaking at events, and other opportunities
  • Participate in organization-wide strategic and operational planning, problem-solving and decision-making

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 8+ years of business development and partnership experience
  • Excellent communications skills, natural collaborator, ability to develop rapport and credibility across the organization and externally and promote ideas persuasively
  • A proven leader and relationship builder who can provide authoritative leadership while fostering partnership and collaboration with all levels of the organization and its partners
  • Excellent negotiation skills, with a proven track record of closing agreements on mutually favorable terms; strong aptitude working with legal contracts
  • A demonstrated ability to multi-task with excellent follow through and execution skills
  • Detail-oriented and possessing strong organizational skills, with the ability to quickly gather and synthesize information across many aspects of the business
  • An all-around seasoned professional with exceptional communication, organizational and time management skills, and the flexibility to adapt quickly to change
  • Ability to travel as needed
