Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Vice President of Production (VP Production) is responsible for the efficient and smooth-running of JMIR operations.

The VP Production will report directly to the CEO as the 2IC (Second in Charge) and is capable to function as his deputy at any time. Reporting to the VP Production are all operational department management heads, such as Editorial, Copy Editing and Production (Human Resources, Sales/Marketing, IT and Finance who will all continue to report directly to the CEO).

The VP Production is directly responsible for planning and directing all aspects of the organization's operational policies, objectives, and initiatives. The VP Production will focus on the ongoing, day-to-day management of production and internal processes to ensure maximum productivity, customer satisfaction and revenue. They will create and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) at all levels, to produce the final publication according to our standards and industry best practices The VP Production also provides the overall leadership, motivation and management to their employees to positively impact operations

Operations

  • Monitor departmental performance against goals to ensure that progress is being made and that corrective action is taken if necessary.
  • Meet regularly with department leaders to facilitate resolution of issues/problems of customers, production and between departments
  • Regularly report to the CEO on the status against plan, and ability to meet its operational objectives
  • Help ensure our SOP (Standard Operating Procedures), daily administration and reporting processes are followed and meet profit margin objectives
  • Maximize the use of technology to improve productivity and service
  • Be a champion of change, contribute to the strategic direction of JMIR initiative

Human Resources

  • Build, lead and deploy the best quality team to achieving the objectives of our corporate strategic plan.
  • Develop a performance culture through a robust performance management process with all employees having regular feedback and specific development plans.
  • Develop a culture of ‘employer of choice’ to attract, retain and motivate the best quality team

Customer Focus

  • Responsibilities include resolving escalated customer enquiries, issues and helping to maintain excellence of service to ongoing and new customers
  • Key point of contact for the operators to connect with the customers
  • Ensure customer satisfaction standards and measures are being met
  • Coordinate with sales and marketing on initiatives

Strategy

  • Develop and implement new business strategies for creating or improving processes and procedures to improve corporate performance
  • Interface with all departments of the organization to ensure that strategic plans are in alignment with daily operations.
  • Foster and develop and collaboration between departments, business units, and other internal groups to ensure an integrated approach to operations and fulfilling the organization’s goals and objectives.
  • Lead and direct program development, work culture enhancement, consensus-building, and internal communications.
  • Act on behalf of the CEO during his absence

Qualifications:

Education

  • Although experience is the prime driver for this role, we would also value;
  • A solid research and academic background
  • University degree in Business, Life Sciences, Engineering, IT or an MBA designation
  • Ideally this role also has a medical background (PhD, MD).

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the publishing industry ideally in STM (Science Technical, Medical)
  • Ideally also 5 years experience in computer science and/or informatics
  • Deep insights and knowledge in all aspects of a digital-based open-access publishing company
  • Has a network of global contacts
  • Experience in small office where flexibility and multi-tasking are key

Technical Skills

  • Familiarity with the standard processes of Publishing product development, IT- technologies, editorial workflows, copy-editing etc.
  • Familiar with innovative knowledge-transfer products, including preprints
