Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Vice President of Engineering (VP Eng.) is responsible for the efficient and smooth-running of JMIR technical platforms. Reporting to the CEO and part of the senior leadership team, with key direct reports of Project Managers, team leads, and DevOps, who manage a team of Full Stack Developers. The VP Eng. also provides the overall leadership, motivation and management to their employees to positively impact operations.

Key outcomes of this position are the department’s ability to achieve the following:

  • Ensure coverage of mission-critical systems supporting the editorial and production teams.
  • Deliver solutions-focused responsiveness to time-sensitive problems.
  • Drive new product development, AI and delivery efforts outside of the existing product portfolio inventory.
  • Proactively identify and address server, system, and application problems.
  • Provide expansion capability for existing services, including but not limited to domestic and off-shore vendor workflows and deliveries.
  • Transform legacy systems into modern, scalable, secure and resilient systems.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Undergraduate degree in software engineering, MBA or related operational education are all preferred but not required.
  • Certification in project management or other widely-accepted methodologies to demonstrate structured approaches (PMP, Six Sigma, Agile, etc.) to project and program oversight.

Experience

  • Demonstrated success in a formal management role with full-cycle management responsibilities for multiple employees.
  • A minimum of ten years of practical and relevant experience in technology solution development.
  • 5+ years of Project Management/Sprint Leadership (SCRUM)
  • Desired Experience;
  • Professional experience within a digital-based open-access publishing company or related field is preferred but not required.
  • Ideally also 7 years' experience in computer science and/or informatics.
  • Experience in small offices where flexibility and multitasking are key.

Technical Skills

  • Familiarity with the standard processes surrounding publishing product development, IT-technologies, editorial workflows, copy-editing etc.
    • OJS - Content Delivery Platform (frontend),
    • Manuscript Management System (backend),
    • Manuscript Management System - Ingestion of a manuscript following submission all the way to publication.
  • Expertise with legacy technologies such as the LAMP Stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP), and modern equivalents such as; Node.js, React, and Vue.js
    • NLM 2.0, XML Version, Transition to JATS XML, XSL
    • 7+years exp in JavaScript & Python
    • 5+ years of PHP
  • Familiar with innovative knowledge-transfer products, including preprints is nice to have
