Geological Society - Head of Editorial Development

Description

The Geological Society is seeking to recruit a high calibre Head of Editorial Development to join its Bath-based publishing team. The role will be focused on the strategic development of a strong programme of book and journal publishing fit for the future, the development of new and novel products or services and the effective management of our in-house editorial team.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A science degree
  • Significant STM publishing experience, preferably with more than one publishing organisation.
  • Wide-ranging exposure to editorial, commissioning or production activities – possibly with some marketing experience.
  • A strong understanding of the workings of the research sector and academic institutions, and of the key issues and developments in scholarly communication, including open science.
  • Direct experience of developing and using online peer review systems.
  • An awareness of the importance of commercial activities in a not-for-profit setting.
  • Some experience of staff management or supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the self-motivation, confidence and adaptability required to work in this outward facing role.

Employment in, or membership of, a learned or professional society may be an advantage. The position will require regular travel between the Society’s Bath and London offices, and some international travel.

Salary:   c. £40,000, commensurate with experience.
