The new CEO will build upon the strong financial results delivered over the past 10 years and manage the business through disruptive challenges by continuing to innovate with creativity and operational and executional strength, co-developing (with the staff, Board of Directors, and key stakeholders) a vision that leads GSW into the next decade. Opportunities will include Open Access, data, and service and product extensions benefitting the geosciences community. The GSW team of ~14 staff and consultants is distributed (working from home offices in US and UK), collaborative, and results-oriented. The team and organization believe that businesses perform best through authentic communication, collaboration, professional development, flexibility, creativity, work/life balance, and commitment to delivering promised results. The winning candidate will be provided with a corporate office near her/his home or can operate in a work-from-home environment. GSW is not able to sponsor a candidate for this position so US citizenship, dual citizenship, or a green card is required.


  • GSW is a leading nonprofit collaborative and comprehensive resource for research and communications in the Earth Sciences. GSW works with societies, institutions, and researchers around the world and provides a single source of access to 50 preeminent scholarly journals, 2,200+ eBooks, and 4 million GeoRef records with specialized and map-based search capabilities and links to curated earth science research around the Web. Since 2005, we have returned $40 million to membership societies to achieve their scientific missions. 
  • GSW’s small, virtual team is close knit and highly collaborative (some having worked together for more than a decade) The ability to work strategically and sleeves up for any task, large or small is an essential aspect of GSW’s core culture. The current group has specific expertise gained over decades working in scholarly publishing but is always eager for improvements that deliver results. Despite having some collective values and preferences cultivated over time together, they are collectively progressive, curious, and eager to explore new growth opportunities, partnerships, and routes to ROI for the organization.
  • GSW is governed by a Board of Directors drawn from its member society publishers, with additional representation from the STEM publishing community and user base. With senior staff and consultant input the Board is currently undertaking a review of GSW’s governance driven in part by major changes in recent years in the publishing landscape.


  • Provide inspired leadership to the virtual Executive and staff teams.
  • Establish a strong working relationship with partner societies and non-profit board of directors.
  • Is accountable for fiscal activity including budgeting, auditing and reporting.
  • Envision, develop and optimize systems (broadly defined) for future performance and continuous improvement.
  • Manage a varied portfolio of digital products (journals, eBook, A&I and search, data, and gray literature) and services, across relevant markets, and commercial models. 
  • Pursue and complete the governance review work underway, preparing the organization to thrive and seize opportunities in an evolving landscape. The CEO will work closely with the Executive Committee, senior staff, and key stakeholders as this work progresses.
  • Conceive and execute strategies that expand beyond traditional publishing definitions and deliver expanded products and services that meet challenges and achieve organizational goals. 
  • Explore partnership opportunities and launch new projects in sometimes unfamiliar territory.
  • Broaden GSW’s market penetration and reach within the constraints of the current economic environment.
  • Monitor global markets and customer experience, encompassing sales, marketing, circulation, branding, and market intelligence.
  • Utilize the existing knowledge base while strategically guiding the group and providing further developmental opportunities and plans.
  • Maintain and further develop systemwide approaches for meeting design, decision making, and enterprise management for remote-working teams developed over the past 3-4 years with leadership and executive team consultant(s).
  • Provide inclusive environment for innovation, idea development and planning for execution.


  • At least 5 years of leadership experience.
  • Experienced executive with P/L financial management background and record of excellent results. 
  • Experience overseeing annual budgets and adhering to authorized budgets and financial targets.
  • Expert at working efficiently within governance structures.
  • Acumen with short- and long-term strategic planning.
