BioOne - Director of Technology

A not-for-profit aggregation of journals in bioscience, BioOne is looking for a dynamic strategic-thinker to help lead the 20-year old organization into the future. The Director of Technology is a senior or director-level staff position who reports to the President/CEO. This position supervises 1-2 team members and coordinates closely with all BioOne staff, interfaces with BioOne’s platform vendor and technology partners, and actively supports the strategic development of BioOne. The ability to communicate fluently in both tech and non-tech is a must.

Core Responsibilities and Duties

The DoT is an advocate for users of BioOne’s digital products, beginning with BioOne Complete. With a focus on user advocacy and best practices that support superior operational performance for customers and other stakeholders, a core responsibility of the DoT is to develop a plan of action designed to achieve BioOne’s business goals through the implementation of digital initiatives. This encompasses all aspects of business decision-making, as it concerns the strategic adoption of new technologies and digital solutions to improve BioOne’s digital products, as well as routine business practices. The DoT collaborates with the BioOne management team to execute on BioOne’s mission, by identifying pathways for new programs, services, and digital products that increase net return on BioOne products, and improving business efficiency and cohesion.

The DoT will

  • Act as the chief BioOne liaison and point person with BioOne’s platform vendor. In addition, manage other technological vendors, partners, and memberships pertinent to BioOne’s digital products and activities, ensuring smooth operational performance.
  • Collaborate with BioOne staff and board to develop, project and budget for, as well as implement strategic initiatives and other organizational directives, based on community feedback, industry knowledge, and other modeling activities.
  • Act as the intermediary between the BioOne community (users, libraries, publishers, and vendors) and BioOne’s technological partners, facilitating and advocating for the continuous delivery of programs, services, and troubleshooting barriers to access and a positive user experience.
  • Cultivate a thorough understanding of industry best practices, emerging standards, and trend spotting (adoption/avoidance) to provide a superior user experience for BioOne Complete stakeholders (researchers, libraries, publishers).
  • Identify and engage with open-access initiatives that are concerned with producing practical results and may provide tangible benefits to BioOne.
  • Define and implement development priorities for BioOne digital products in (a) the context of BioOne’s current cluster of pertinent vendors and partners and (b) any future state with a new cluster of vendors and partners.
  • Contribute to BioOne Board and Committee meeting materials, proposed policies, and digital development initiatives.
  • Advise on brand management, especially as it relates to information architecture, in collaboration with the BioOne sales and marketing team.
  • Share progress on projects with BioOne staff and escalate any issues in a timely manner.
  • Develop and manage a budget for technological initiatives, products, and memberships.
  • Engage actively with the scholarly communications/publications community by attending meetings and serving on committees as appropriate.


  • 3-5 years experience with managing large-scale digital projects with many inter-dependent technologies
  • Experience with software development and user testing; experience with information technologies and publishing services
  • BA/BS degree; business experience a plus
  • Demonstrated expertise with project management tools appropriate for initiatives
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and to adapt when priorities change
  • Excellent customer service skills with a professional demeanor
  • Pro-active self-starter who is comfortable working with cross-functional teams
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills
  • Patience and dedication when working with clients, vendors, and internal teams
  • Strong analytical, critical, and creative problem-solving skills.
