APS logoThe American Physiological Society (APS) is searching for a top-notch publishing executive to serve as our Chief Publishing Officer (CPO) to provide leadership for the society’s world-class publications portfolio of 15 journals and book monograph series. The position manages a staff of 36, including six direct reports.

We are looking for an innovator, capable of recognizing and advancing solutions that continually increase the value and appeal of the journals for authors, readers and institutions. The CPO will act as a change agent in an increasingly disrupted market, ensuring that our publishing program is well-positioned to succeed in a turbulent marketplace. As the CPO, you will oversee the quality and timeliness of the publications process and ensure that workflow and published output reflects best practice and meets current standards of ethics integrity, as well as recommend and implement strategy for the program.

The CPO will support and advise the society’s publication committee and editors-in-chief, serving as their primary liaison. In collaboration with colleagues in marketing and finance departments, the CPO is responsible for a substantial ROI to the society. Ideally, you will have an exceptional level of market awareness and engagement within the global biomedical research/publishing communities. Travel is required as necessary to fulfill the role. The CPO reports to the executive director of the society and serves on the senior management team. The position is located at the society’s headquarters in Rockville, Maryland.

Key responsibilities and requirements include:

  • Budget responsibility for the publications program, including targets for growth, as measured by manuscript submissions, usage and citation metrics, and sales
  • Develop and launch new journals and ancillary products as directed by strategic plans
  • Lead and champion the launch of the new journal, Function, currently in development
  • Provide support to and serve as key liaison with the Publications Committee Chair and Editors in Chief
  • Collaborate with journal editors on a range of topics including journal submissions, ethics, quality, presentation and marketing of journal content, strategies for improving impact
  • Attend, organize and prepare materials for journal editorial board meetings, Publications Committee meetings and Council meetings
  • Manage, collaboratively, five staff departmental heads and an administrative assistant
  • Lead by example, setting the highest standards for staff and colleagues
  • Work collaboratively with the executive team towards strategic goals set by the society
  • Understand the roles of the other departments in the society and how each functions
  • Provide intelligence and strong direction to the marketing team for optimal journal promotion
  • Oversee publications ethics policy and procedure and support decisions regarding ethical infractions
  • Negotiate successful contracts with vendors that support the publications process and output, and oversee the relationships
  • Develop and launch new journals and ancillary products as directed by strategic plans
  • Ensure adherence to editorial policy enhancements driven by the research community and appropriate to the publications program

Key applicant requirements:

  • Minimum 10+ years of senior management responsibility in scholarly journals publishing
  • Experience in working for or with professional society publishing programs
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills
  • Financial management and budgeting expertise
  • Passion for the scholarly publishing process
  • High-level experience in managing the following areas: editorial acquisition, new journal startups/launches, digital production processes, contract negotiations, budgets
  • Understanding of the global science research community needs and priorities
  • Proven track record in working collaboratively with authors and editors
  • Proven track record in contributing to organizational vision and implementing strategy
  • The energy and leadership necessary to facilitate a positive working environment in an high caliber society with high caliber, collaborative staff and volunteer leadership
  • Advanced academic degree preferred
