Overview

Are you considering, or auditing your existing, international sales opportunities for your books? Our panel of industry experts will provide an overview of different approaches to international markets. They will discuss key issues such as selling foreign language rights, working with third parties to increase reach, the value of attending conferences and trade fairs, as well as the role of print on demand. They will also cover sales and distribution of print and eBooks, piracy, cross-border selling and cultural considerations.

Stephen is Business Development Director of Eurospan Group, a London-based marketing, sales and distribution agency that works in all international markets outside North America, mainly for American academic and professional book publishers. Over the last four decades he has held senior editorial, sales and marketing roles in trade and academic/professional  publishers , both commercial and not-for-profit, including periods working in the USA and Australia. He has always travelled widely for both business and pleasure, often carrying his violin. After a hard day of business meetings, he will often be found playing string quartets with fellow amateur musicians in whatever city he finds himself.

 Ove KahlerOve Kähler, Director for Product Management & Global Distribution, Brill
Ove Kähler is Director for Product Management & Global Distribution at Brill. Prior to joining Brill in 2011, he served in a variety of positions in marketing, sales, publishing, and product development at Elsevier, Springer and Dow Jones. Ove holds a Master’s degree in Eastern-European History from the University of Mainz (Germany) and an MBA from Nyenrode University (Netherlands).

John ShererJohn Sherer, Director, University of North Carolina Press 
John Sherer was named the seventh director of the University of North Carolina Press in June of 2012. Since his arrival the Press has published two New York Times bestsellers and has been the recipient of several major foundation grants including a $998,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support new scaled models for high quality monograph publications through the Press’s Longleaf subsidiary.

Previously, he was the publisher of Basic Books in New York and also held the positions of Publisher of Nation Books, member of the AAP Trade Executive Committee, and adjunct professor at New York University’s School for Continuing and Professional Studies. He has held marketing positions at Henry Holt, the Brookings Institution and was a manager and buyer at Olsson’s Books and Records in Washington, DC. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
