Growing Successful Open Access Journals

Overview

Are you running a journal or journal programme to deliver on your Open Access publishing strategy? Do you have responsibility for implementing an OA programme? Do you need to inform your approach to OA with a practical perspective?

This course will equip participants with the tools to make a success of an Open Access journal or journal programme. We will do this by taking people through the complexities and challenges of Open Access, highlighting the ways in which OA publishing is deeply different to subscription publishing (and some ways that it is the same!).

The course will be a practical, hands-on exploration of launching, converting, running and developing Open Access journals. Delegates will participate in group discussion, will work through case studies and scenarios to develop high level strategies. We will cover the economics of Open Access publishing – considering costs, pricing and revenue and encouraging delegates to conceive of each rigorously in an era of greater scrutiny. Through the lens of a typical day for running an OA journal or journal programme we will explore the issues encountered including finances, ethics, operations, sales and marketing.

What will you learn?

Participants will gain an understanding and appreciation of the levers they can pull to achieve success. The key similarities and deep differences of running an OA journal or journal programme compared to a traditional programme. An understanding of open access workflows and business models and an awareness of key developments in the open access arena. The importance of relationships with stakeholders and an awareness of how these change in an OA context. Knowledge of the policy environment – including the very latest developments such as Plan S. New sources of data and information to complement traditional avenues of research in the OA sphere.

There are no easy answers but you will leave with the essential background knowledge and tools and templates to maximise your chances of success.

We will cover Green Open Access and alternative Gold Open Access models in brief but the focus will be on Gold OA journals with Article Publishing Charges (APCs).

Who should attend (Level 2-3)

This course is aimed at journal publishing managers, publishing editors and publishers responsible for inputting to and implementing Open Access strategy, developing open access journals or expanding an existing programme. We will assume some prior awareness of the open access industry, although this isn’t essential.
Please bring a laptop or tablet along to this course, if possible.

She is passionate about supporting colleagues and editorial teams in the rewarding process of developing their open access journals.

Dan Pollock, Delta Think Inc

Dan Pollock picDan has worked in scholarly and professional publishing for 25 years, helping publishing companies to successfully explore and exploit new digital opportunities. Most recently he was publishing director of Jordan Publishing (through its acquisition by LexisNexis), having previously held digital product development and strategic advisory roles in organisations including Elsevier Health Sciences, Nature Publishing Group (running nature.com) and Outsell Inc. He is old enough to have used a typewriter, but young enough to have gone digitally native.  He is now an independent publishing consultant, advising organisations on publishing strategy, change management and new product development, including work as part of the Delta Think team for its work on Open Access data analytics.
