Developing Open Access and Hybrid Journals

The aim of this course is to introduce staff from all areas of journals publishing to the complexities and unique challenges of running an open access journal or journals programme. Delegates will participate in group discussion of open access journals and will work through case studies to develop high level strategies for launching or converting open access journals including finances, operations, and sales and marketing. By the end of the course delegates should have an understanding of the key steps involved in establishing and maintaining open access journals, as well as an awareness of some of the key issues to navigate.


  • A short introduction to the Gold and Green Open Access landscape
  • The Open Access Universe Market size, subject area differences, compliance, new developments
  • Business models: author charges, memberships, sponsorship, consortia deals, philanthropy, offsets, etc
  • Pricing strategies and approaches
  • Open access launches versus transitioning mature journals
  • Systems, workflows and best practice
  • Ethical considerations: vanity publishing, conflicts of Interest
  • Marketing and branding
  • The future of open access publishing.

Please bring a laptop or tablet along to this course if possible.

What will you learn?

Appreciate the measures required to create successful open access journals and have an ability to apply these to various situations and organisations, understand open access workflows and business models, have an awareness of key developments in the open access arena.

Who should attend (Level 2-3)

This course is aimed at journal publishing managers, publishing editors and publishers interested in developing open access journals or expanding an existing programme. We will assume some prior awareness of the open access industry, although this isn’t essential.

Fiona Counsell, Taylor & Francis

Fiona Counsell picFiona has been working in the publishing industry for over eight years, mainly in editorial, managing and developing journals for Taylor & Francis. Since 2016 Fiona has been Open Access Publisher responsible for driving open access at Taylor & Francis. Fiona works on open access policy, advocacy, infrastructure and leads Taylor & Francis’ project converting journals from hybrid to full open access. She is passionate about supporting colleagues and editorial teams in the rewarding process of developing their open access journals.
