Improving diversity and inclusivity can seem daunting, as the issues are so varied and best practice is not yet clear. But there are many steps you can take to start on this journey and begin creating an inclusive culture. This practical course will help you understand the benefits of a strong Diversity and Inclusion strategy, your legal and ethical obligations as a manager, and how to develop and implement a successful strategy going forward. Diversity and inclusion have never been higher on the news and social agenda than at present, and this course will help delegates understand how to take practical steps to improve inclusion.

  • The range of diversity: gender, race, ethnicity, class, educational background, sexuality, cognitive diversity, etc – what do these all mean and how do you identify them?
  • Why now? The legal frameworks, relevant legislation on workers’ rights, the PA’s 10 point plan
  • How to undertake a D&I audit and put together a policy
  • Developing a recruitment strategy for attracting a more diverse talent pool
  • Essential tips and tools for removing bias in the recruitment and advancement process
  • Creating an inclusive culture
  • The talent pipeline: what are the costs of losing talented staff, what role does inclusion play in this, and how can an inclusive culture enable you to retain your rising stars?
  • Quotas: the pros and cons
  • How diversity promotes innovation
  • How to build a diverse publishing list
  • Challenges of commissioning from a more diverse author base
  • The role of societies and academia in promoting diversity
  • Influencing the ecosystem: how can we encourage our stakeholders to take action on diversity?

What will you learn?

Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of their obligations in this area, plus a list of tools and frameworks which will enable then to take forward diversity and inclusion initiatives in their organizations. The focus of the course is highly practical and focussed on actions, not rhetoric.

Who should attend (Level 2-3)

This course is primarily aimed at those with management and leadership responsibilities, and an interest in creating a more inclusive workplace. Roles might include Head of Department, Publisher, HR Manager, Director, Senior Manager.


Nancy Roberts, Director, Business Inclusivity and Founder & CEO, Umbrella

Nancy Roberts pictureNancy worked in publishing for over 20 years in a variety of production and operations roles, following on from the completion of her postgraduate publishing diploma at West Herts College. Until 2017 she was Global Operations Director, Academic, at Cambridge University Press. Nancy founded Business Inclusivity in 2017 to support publishers in thinking about how we can use diversity and inclusion to solve business problems and deliver a sustainable industry. Business Inclusivity is a social enterprise meaning profits are reinvested in the business to enable broader access to support. In May 2018 she also launched Umbrella, a data analytics platform currently in development, which will allow businesses to quantify diversity and inclusion and take concrete actions. As well as working on diversity and inclusion strategies, she also provides personal coaching and leadership development, and is Head of Technology and Content at Maverick. She has a PhD in Postcolonial Feminist Literary Theory and is currently an EMBA student at Cranfield University.

Katy Snell, Emerald Group

Katy SnellKaty has worked in the publishing industry for over 16 years. A senior HR leader with extensive strategic and operational experience in all aspects of HR. Katy is used to working in challenging and complex environments and leading businesses through significant change. She is a Chartered member of the CIPD and has an MBA from Bradford School of Management. Katy is currently Group Head of People at Emerald Publishing, where she is responsible for HR, L&D and Internal Communications on a global scale, and plays a key role in ensuring an inclusive culture where diversity and individuality is valued.
