Why ALPSP introduced 'ALPSP Author Choice'?
'Many ALPSP publisher members have introduced open access business models for their journals. We have always supported the need for experimentation of alternative business models including Open Access.  The early results following the introduction of the service show that Author Choice can provide additional income which can be used to support the journal in a number of ways, including an increase in the number of pages published.'
Nick Evans, ALPSP COO and Publisher of Learned Publishing

What type of Open Access scheme is 'ALPSP Author Choice'?
'ALPSP Author Choice' is an optional Open Access scheme whereby authors can choose to make the online version of their article in Learned Publishing freely available on publication in return for the payment of a fee.

What are the costs for authors of participating in the scheme?
Authors of articles which have been accepted for publication by the Editors of Learned Publishing, may choose to pay a fee to make their article/s freely available online on the Ingenta Connect site.

The 2010 rates for ALPSP Author Choice are £1,375/$2,750/€1,750 per article for ALPSP and Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) members and £1,800/$3,500/€2,250 for non-members. For 'Points of View' contributions the fee will be 50% of the above.

The fees have been calculated to reflect the current costs of peer review, editing, and other aspects of journal publication.

Does 'ALPSP Author Choice' change the peer review process?
All 'ALPSP Author Choice' articles are treated in the same way as any other article. They will go through the standard acceptance procedures and will be rejected or accepted on their own merit. Authors will only be offered the option of paying to participate in the 'ALPSP Author Choice' scheme after their article has formally been accepted for publication.

How will 'ALPSP Author Choice' affect copyright?
Articles included in the 'ALPSP Author Choice' scheme will be made available under the Creative Commons 'Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works' 2.0 UK: England & Wales Licence.

The copyright in the article/s remains with the author/s, and ALPSP will acknowledge this in the copyright line which appears on the article. All authors are free to use the pre-publication version (after peer review, but not the published article/PDF) of their articles for the internal educational or other purposes of their own institution or company; mounted on their own or institutional website; posted to free public servers of preprints and/or articles in the relevant subject area; or in whole or in part, as the basis for further publications or spoken presentations. 'ALPSP Author Choice' further entitles authors to post the final PDF version of the article which may be posted as specified above, provided acknowledgement to the published original in standard bibliographic citation form is given, together with a link.

Subscription rates
The subscription rates for 2010 will remain as currently advertised.  Should the number of articles included in the journal under the ALPSP Open Access scheme have a significant impact on revenue levels, then ALPSP Council will review current subscription rates and also consider how the funds earned in fees may be used to support the development of the journal.
