About the Awards
AWARD FOR PUBLISHING INNOVATION sponsored by
2009 winner: PLoS ONE from the Public Library of Science
The nature of learned and professional publishing continues to change rapidly, and this Award recognises a significantly innovative approach to any aspect of publication. Any area of innovation is eligible - it could, for example, be a novel type of print or online publication or service, or even a radically different approach to a marketing campaign. As before, entry is open to all, although the owner of the publication must support the application. The judges will consider the originality and innovative qualities of each application, together with its utility, benefit to its community and long term development prospects. Your application should, therefore, provide information about these aspects together with any other information which you believe makes your project or publication truly innovative.
The judges will consider all the applications and then draw up a shortlist for each award. Representatives of the shortlisted applications will be invited to give a 15-minute presentation to the judges in London on Thursday 15 July. Where travel to London is not practical, this can be via a conference call. The winners will be announced at the Awards Dinner on 9 September.
AWARD FOR BEST NEW JOURNAL sponsored by
2009 winner: Evolutionary Applications published by Wiley-Blackwell
This Award is open to any peer-reviewed journal launched in the last 1-3 years. The journal must have published its first volume or at least 3 issues (journals without volume numbers or issues should have been published for a least a year at the time of the submission).
The journal may be print, online or both but must include a substantial number of peer reviewed articles. The judges will consider four main aspects of the journal and its launch: market research, editorial strategy, marketing and commercial success.
Please include the following details in your application. How were key issues surrounding the launch decision were addressed and what post launch measures of success were employed. For example:- What criteria did you use when determining whether to launch this title? How did you select and appoint the Editor and the Editorial Board? Describe your marketing plan. Explain anything about the journal (eg marketing, content, delivery or format) you consider to be innovative. Describe the means by which you have measured the success of the journal to date and outline your plans for its future development.
Please note that if you do not provide sufficient information about the journal, the panel will not be able to give due consideration to the application.
