ALPSP response to EC green paper 'Copyright in the Knowledge Economy'

ALPSP response (PDF)

ALPSP has submitted our response to the EC green paper 'Copyright in the Knowledge Economy'.  The green paper was issued by the Internal Market and Services Directorate General of the European Commission.

The ALPSP response was drafted by Fiona Bennett (OUP) and the ALPSP Copyright Committee.  Our position is that the current intellectual property (IP) regime is working pretty well and striking a good balance between the needs of users and those of rightholders; protection for rightsholders means that they can recoup fair reward for their intellectual property and thus encourages creativity and innovation.  We therefore do not see the need for any new or expanded Europe-wide copyright exceptions, although we do understand the need to keep the legal framework for IP under review in the light of changing technology and user behaviour.

ALPSP believes that licensing solutions (both collective and primary) offer market-driven, flexible solutions that often results in greater and easier access than would be available via exceptions to copyright - and of course the interests of rightsholders are fully protected.

The full text of the ALPSP response is available as a pdf document.
