We are very excited to be launching this new Conference.  The Conference Program Committee and our colleagues at ALPSP have done a great deal of work to find an excellent venue and to put together an informative and stimulating program which appeals to the breadth of our diverse membership.  We therefore have sessions of relevance to all of those involved in scholarly and professional publishing including keynote addresses from Timo Hannay (Nature Publishing Group) and Paul Evans (Elsevier).  In addition we have plenary sessions on running an environmentally friendly publishing house and looking at the future of the World Wide Web.  There are sessions for book publishers and for journal publishers and we will cover topics of interest to publishers of humanities and social sciences as well as those working in scientific, technical and medical publishing.

Of course the Conference is much more than just a series of presentations.  It is a not-to-be-missed opportunity for ALPSP members to get together to discuss issues of common interest and to share information and best practice in an informal setting.  We therefore have a lively social program which starts with a cocktail reception and buffet.  The conference dinner will include the announcement of the winners of the 2008 ALPSP Awards and we are particularly pleased that Ben Goldacre - author of The Guardian's 'Bad Science' column - will be our after dinner speaker.  We have also built in plenty of opportunities to network with colleagues, both old and new.

We should like to take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors for their generous support and in particular our three Gold Sponsors, the Copyright Licensing Agency, Portland Customer Services and Swets.

Our industry operates at a time of unprecedented change and uncertainty.  ALPSP members have proven to be adaptable and innovative and the Conference will be an opportunity to help continue that success.  It will be a unique meeting of those working in scholarly communication and related industries and we very much look forward to seeing you there!

Robert Parker - Chair, ALPSP
Ian Russell - Chief Executive, ALPSP
